What Exactly Made Don King Fall off?

What exactly made Don King fall off the top of the boxing game?

For several years he was THE MAN in boxing!

Promoting all the biggest stars in the sport and doing amazing wonders for his top tier clients.

He was pretty much the man in control of the heavyweight division having signed all the best stars in the weight class.

Look what he did for Tito Trinidad and all the other smaller weight class stars.

Did Don King just get old over night and lost the fire to be the top man in the game? It seems everything he's been through so has Top Rank and even now Golden Boy yet DKP is like no where on the level it once was or near the level of TR, GB or even PBC.

    So what happened exactly?

If I remember correctly His wife got sick and then eventually died. They had been married for like 60+ years. He lost a lot of zest for the sport when she got sick.

I guess seeing your true love dying could do that.

His way of doing business and reputation is what happened. He stole a lot of money from his fighters. During a ceremony earlier this year Chavez Sr asked King in public "where is my money?" in a joking manner, and later explained that he still owned him money but that it is what it is. He burned all bridges, with fighters and networks, and both parties shunned him eventually. Hence, why he sort of disappeared. They didn't want to make business with him.

Some fighters can still look him in the eye because they got past it and because King has good charisma, he knows how to work people.

Here's an excellent documentary on him that I watched a while ago which perfectly sums up who he was and will clear things up for you:

It will also show how King conned people with his personality and manipulative ways, as will also show you how big of a shady rat and criminal he was/is. The guy was a smart thug.

Ali once settled for $50K dollars when King owned him MILLIONS. It is all detailed in the doc, you'll enjoy it.

        That is sad.

Also Don King got old. I always thought he groomed his son Carl to take over the business some day but I an not sure he could ever relinquish control.

          Yeah, kind of sad.

Also, given what happened with Mike, it was probably hard for King to sign any more superstars.

King wasn't THE MAN for several years, he was the man for at least 2 decades.

All (good) things end with time. He was THE power guy for a long time. I guess Arum outlasted him. Fighters got a little smarter and many stopped taking the bag of cash in the dark alley. BHOP loved sticking it to him when he beat Clitoris Cloud a few years ago. Nard really socked it to him while he waved 85 flags around, pretending he didn't hear him.

Probaby when Don King started employing an a.ssbackwards business model of keeping his top fighters inactive. Just look at Bermane Stiverne; the guy won the WBC title and once a year until he lost it to Wilder. When you're fighting once (or less than that) a year, you're not making money and you're not staying sharp. Don King is probably one of the worst promoters for boxing fans, just for the sheer fact that he kept his big name fighters from fighting. It's mind boggling
