No announcement yet.
Broner is still a natural 135-140 pounder, he is just undisciplined

Porter fought in the amateurs at Middleweight. He slimmed down as a pro to Welterweight. Everyone around the sport knows that Porter is a big and strong Welterweight.
Broner on the other hand started his career at Jr Featherweight.
Did you not hear Daniel Jacobs recalling Porter's amateur days during the telecast?
On top of that, Porter came in at 161, Broner 156.
So where/how is Broner bigger than Porter?
Sure Porter weighed a few more pounds but don't sit here and pretend Porter had some kind of size advantage.
Physically, in the ring they were pretty equal. Broner taller, Porter a few pounds heavier.
Size wasn't a factor here. It was the style match up and the limitations of Broner. We've seen Broner struggle with small guys too, Ponce de Leon, Fernando Quintero (Broner was out-landed 154-83), and hell even Paulie nearly beat him. It's clearly not about weight.

This thread ignores age and genetics. At 25, he's at a point when guys start to fill out, especially if it's in their genes (look at his dad). He's been bursting at the seams for a while and it's only going to get worse. Yes, he may have looked better when he was lighter but that's not an option for him anymore. Discipline aside, he can't make 135 anymore.

Yeah i mentioned a few days ago that he can no longer boil down to lightweight anymore. Maybe he could when he was 21-22 but now thats life, the older some guys get, the harder it is to shift weight. Some guys are lucky where they can continue to do it with age, Broner isn't one of them. I think the minimum he could get down to would be 140 and i don't think it would be that comfortable. Look at guys like Tyson, he was as short as some middleweights but i doubt he could have even got down to cruiserweight. Broner is a stocky guy, he doesn't look fleshy at the weight, he looks cut and in good shape when its time to fight.
The real issue is that he just isn't that good. He can't boil down to 135 and bully guys anymore so he has to fight guys his own size and his skills are just not great. I think he can be a much better fighter though but he is just trying to be some sort of slickster which probably don't suit his natural attributes.
The reality is that he just isn't as good as he was hyped to be. He's still a good fighter but not a top tier fighter. No shame in that, not everybody can be elite. If he didn't act the way he does, people would just be like "Broner, yeah he's pretty good" - But when you're saying you're going to take over the sport and carrying on the way he does, people are only going to ridicule you when it goes wrong. Only has himself to blame really.Last edited by deathofaclown; 06-23-2015, 08:39 PM.

He is just a pretty good fighter. It doesn't matter what weight he fights at he still will not be an outstanding fighter. I agree he should fight at 140 pounds or even 135 if he is strong at that weight. Broner seems gun shy now. He doesn't like to take punishment and he will hold and run rather than trade punches with a guy like Maidana or Porter. He doesn't have the skill to stand in front of them and make them miss and make them pay. He can't handle a hard puncher who comes at him hard and fast with both fists blazing. His defense against them is running and holding. At 140 I think Matthysse and Ruslin will work him over the same way Porter and Maidana did at 144 and 147. If he is not a hard trainer now what reason is there to believe he will train hard in the future?
