Comments Thread For: Provodnikov's Manager: Humberto Soto, Rios Possible

Vadim Kornilov, manager of ex-WBO light welterweight champion and one of the Russian state's biggest stars, Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs), traced his protege's future in a quickie with a Fight Club TV reporter during the action of another of his boxers Sergey Kuzmin.

"Ruslan's fight against Matthysse was very close, and we know why we lost it. We know those reasons, and we can do better. A rematch with the Argentinean is our priority but Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) has different plans at the moment, he is on his native land right now.

Why isn't Haymon trying to get Provodnikov on PBC? Casual fans would love this guy. And he's got so many guys at welter to match him with.

He should go for Crawford, and the winner can fight with the winner of Postol-Matthysse in a unification.

No, Provo said he'd fight anyone at 140 or 147.

              March 12, 2014:

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes former champion Brandon Rios, is not confident in Rios' belief that he can make the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds.

Rios has been pushing for a fight with WBO 140-pound champion Ruslan Provodnikov, who returns to HBO on June 14th.

Provodnikov's promoter, Artie Pelullo, has rejected the idea of facing Rios, because Arum advised him ahead of time that Rios is unable to make 140. Rios last fought as a welterweight, losing a twelve round decision to Manny Pacquiao last November. After the fight, Rios tested positive for a banned substance that assists athletes with losing weight.

Despite the recent history, Rios - during last week's interview with BoxingScene - maintained that he is capable of making 140.

But his promoter disagrees and doesn't want another incident where a fighter fails to make the contract weight.

"There is a big problem there with the weight. Provodnikov wants to fight for his title at 140 and I have no confidence that Rios can make 140," Arum told BoxingScene.com.

So if Rios and Provo fight, are we supposed to pretend that the winner is a champion "boxer" or that a "boxer" wouldnt be able to beat these face first brawlers?

After watching Provo get outboxed by Matthysse, I lost alot of faith in him winning againt alot of top fighters. His hand speed is just too slow. Give him Molina Jr and then go after Postol.

Soto would give Provo a good fight and it could send Soto into the retirement slope if Provo is on his A game.
