The funny thing about weight reduction as a heavyweight is that the fighter knows he will get moved around by punches that don't even land in vunerable area's! These guys feel better mentally at 255 even though they will perform better at 220.
If this kid get down to 218 then build back up to 222-225lbs his speed will add power because someone taught this kid fundamentals. He jabs throws a straight righ leans out and double hooks bottom to top.
The biggest fault I see technically is the jab by itself rows back to him and he repeats the same head movement far to often. The counter right hands can land with that repeated move.
I do like this kid and he keeps moving forward from the first bell to the last.
Love to see him in top condition physically & mentally, this kid could be a problem fpor alot of guys older than he is.

I agree with Cuauhtémoc1520, this as much a mentally revaluation and training as it is physically. The young man needs both so if he can over come this personal battle I think we have a compact heavy who can box very well.

He doesn't need to get this low. Steve Cunningham fights at around 210-220 and he couldn't even burst a g**** in fruit fight. Same thing with Amir Amsour - he came into this last fight at 210 and his performance was really flat.

A drastic weight loss will hinder Ruiz; he needs to gradually take off the weight (and keep it off) and fight somewhere around 230

He needs to shift some weight from his gut to his legs and upper body. 30 lbs sounds about right. 256 his last fight puts him at 226, if he really lost 30 lbs.

This is great to hear. We need more HWs to get serious about their conditioning so the fights won't be a chore to watch.

30lbs in 6 weeks? Half of that will be muscle losing weight that quickly.

I doubt he showed up to training camp at 256, try about 3 bills and is now about 270. The guy probably eats like a biggest loser contestant. If he is trim for a fight I will be shocked unless they put him on some PED ****tail.com

I always thought his weight reflected how serious he took his career and training. If he trains hard he might be a contender some day.

When I first saw this kid on Boxeo a year or so ago I was impressed at how light he was on his feet and his speed for being overweight it seemed. I thought this guy had some serious talent, and if someone got him in shape the sky was the limit.

The best thing for Ruiz' career would be to stay with Abel Sanchez and keep the weight off. It would be good to see another heavyweight prospect.
