Has there been another prospect as popular and talked about as Verdejo is?

pretty much any olympic medalist from a major boxing nation (usa, uk, mexico, puerto rico, etc.) will receive a bunch of fanfare when they turn pro. the biggest phenomenon i've ever witnessed, from a uk pov, was amir khan

Chavez Jr. never had a lot of hype behind him by the mainstream boxing fans. Lots of people were calling out his flaws.

Benavidez Jr. had loads of hype behind him. As did Victor Ortiz coming up

SRL was very popular but I think ODLH was even more. His debut was a huge deal and I think he got $150,000 dollars for his first fight

Here in P.R. even JuanMa Lopez had more hype around him at some point, when he was coming up knocking everybody out in the first few rounds.

That said, Felix Verdejo is just getting there and the expectation on him is a little different. Given his quality (which many became aware of during his performance in London), his dedication (the kid appears to be very simple-minded and have that tunnel vision needed to focus solely on improving his craft) and charisma (and a good team guided by top rank) he is expected to be the one carrying the flag for PR boxing for the next decade or so...

Last Saturday was the perfect step up in class, Ivan Najera brought it (great chin and will, nice pop) and Verdejo had a great learning experience of going rounds despite an injury and not losing control of the fight at any point.

Many of us believe we're looking at a future multi-division world champion with 130 lbs as the beginning of his world championship reign. I'd like to see him in future match ups against a veteran the likes of Orlando Salido and then a potential modern classic against the great mexican prospect Oscar Valdez. First things first though and that is getting that hand fixed.

Verdejo doesn't even have more hype than cotto did as a young prospect. He still has time though, I think he can maybe get there, puerto Rico is thirst for a new start, and cotto being a complete prick, theres opportunity for Verdejo to become loved.

As far as upcoming fighters being hyped, it's hard to best out Hoya or Vargas. Those dudes hype out of the amateurs was huge.
