Rocky Marciano
In 1969, Rocky Marciano was known as the "undefeated, retired heavyweight champion of the world".
[edit]
Muhammad Ali
At that time Muhammad Ali (A.K.A. Cassius Clay), refused induction into the US armed forces, and was stripped of the heavyweight championship.
[edit]
The radio series
Meanwhile, Miami boxing promoter, Murry Woroner, was hosting a radio show, where he would give blow by blow commentary, of fanasty boxing matches, done by (what was at the time) a state-of-art computer, known as National Cash Register (NCR 315). The radio show was a boxing tournament of fansty boxing matches, of past heavyweight champions, to determine the "All-Time Heavyweight Champion of the World". Rocky Marciano won the tournament defeating Jack Dempsey. Muhammad Ali was also in the tournament, but lost early.
[edit]
The offer
Ali was upset about losing early, he went to see Woroner about this. Ali threatened to sue him. Instead, Woroner made him an offer to fight Rocky Marciano on film, and a computer would score the fight. Ali accepted. Wanting one last shot at glory, Marciano accepted as well.
[edit]
The technology
Woroner would feed into the computer, two different fighters. The computer would then compare the two fighters, by their speed, agility, power, etc. Next, the computer would print out a script of what would happen in each round, and the winner of the fight.
The two fighters sparred 50-75 rounds, which were spliced into the film. The fighters fought just as how the computer said they would. They also agreed that head punches were pulled, but body punches were real. About 7 or 8 different endings were filmed. The one that was choosen was Marciano winning by KO in the 13th round.
[edit]
The Superfight
On January 20, 1970, the fight was shown once in 1500 theaters in the United States, Canada, and throughout Europe.
After being shown in theaters, it was once on ABC, after that all prints of the fight were destroyed.
The Superfight DVD coverHowever, there was one print that wasn't destroyed, and on December 27, 2005, The Superfight was released on DVD after 35 years, of not seeing it. The DVD includes 2 disks, with the complete fight, a documentry, and loads of extras.

The same computer used to decide the outcome of that fight was used to try to detirmine the outcome of Joe Frazier vs Bob Foster in a heavyweight title fight in November of 1970. The computer picked Foster to stop Frazier in the sixth round. Since Frazier knocked Foster out in the second round, the computer could not have been more wrong.Comment

It didnt happen. Im not positive but I believe they either posed for pictures or gently sparred for the camera to create the video for a computer generated fight based on their stats and styles.Comment
