Comments Thread For: Willie Monroe on Cotto-Canelo, Golovkin, Catch-Weights

This past weekend in Brooklyn, middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. sat ringside at the Barclays Center and watched WBC champion Miguel Cotto retain his belt with a fourth round stoppage of Daniel Geale.

Monroe, who spent most of his career in the junior middleweight division, took the opportunity in entering and winning the Boxcino middleweight tournament and parleyed the accomplishment into a fight with WBA/IBO champion Gennady Golovkin.

Amazing how no one gave a crap about Monroe or his opinion before the GGG fight but now everyone wants to know what he thinks on every topic as if getting his ass beat by GGG has instantly made him an authority on boxing.

Well, he did win that boxcino tournament that gained him some early noteriety. That is what got him the GGG fight, so he then had two spotlights on him.

He did reasonably well against GGG too, but I disagree with him here.

He basically says "if you're the A-side why not force your opponent into a catchweight?"

The answer is your win is devalued and everyone thinks you're an underhand piece of shit for doing it.

That may be so, but he is right about politics being a big part of the game as well. Winning at the negotiation table is just as important to the fight, as the fight itself these days. It's the era we are living in.

It's obvious Monroe has an agenda with his views.

He's upset Golovkin destroyed him and made him quit, his big chance is over.

His only shot left is Cotto now, and by publicly commending/supporting him he hopes Cotto will eventually choose him as an opponent for that $$$$.

I never heard of catchweights in the 60's unless it was with dogs.

Boxing is changing. I was mesmerized by Clay/Ali style as a kid. He changed the face of Boxing from something in a dark corner that came in to bright sunlight !!! He put wildfire in it and People began to watch it more, albeit they wanted him beat to death due to his mouth. He brought big money to the sport.

Thing about Clay/Ali he not only ran but he killed you in the END. He didn't play games, he went for the KILL if he hurt you. He didn't run pot shot , run to the end like May jr. Jr couldn't carry Clay/Ali 's jock strap.

Boxing has continued to change and Jr has brought that change for the BAD !!

Many fighter just love Jr and think he's the greatest thing since hot dogs and apple pie. I am not fer it, I am agin it. Bring back the KO ARTISTS !!

I don't know if Willie tried to run or wanted to run but he didn't run he tried to fight and move but GGG wouldn't allow him to win, gave his face of which I wish he wouldn't do so Willie would have more confidence and then about KILLED HIM in the ring,,,,not literally of course but a vicious KO and thats what will bring boxing BACK !!!

                  Boxing may SPLIT :

Those that love the ballerina chicken running style that ends in controversy

                  or

Those that finish the business with brutal KO's

                  Actually on NSB its split.

I am for the KO ARTISTS and will watch them every time over the Ballerina chicken boys and would love to see a poll on this subject and the outcome.

I for one am convinced the KO artists will bring in the tickets.

I am convinced the reason May Jr has the pull is not to see him win but to see him LOSE !!!!!!!

Well, he does have more authority than you...though you will discount his opinion because it doesn't reinforce your narrative.
