Why is Cotto-Canelo being billed as the next "Super fight"? Canelo ain't elite.

Canelo sucks because one of his best wins is Trout... And Cotto is elite (Cotto lost to Trout)?

    Yep love these Cotto threads

This fight isn't remotely on the level of Mayweather-Pacquiao.
Mayweather-Pacquaio was on the same intensity level as a Friday Night Fights undercard or celebrity charity boxing event so that's not really much of an insult.

I keep hearing about Canelo's improvements but I don't see it and I don't buy it.

He might only be 25 but with over 40 fights under his belt and a pro career spanning almost 10 years he's as good now as he'll ever be. He's plateaued and I don't see that changing. His stamina is awful for a championship level fighter. Even in his lop-sided win over Kirkland, Canelo was pushed against the ropes at times and allowed Kirkland to tee off on him. He doesn't have a weight class to fight in, choosing to fight at 155 for his last couple fights.

I'll confidently pick Cotto to beat him should the fight ever get made.

Cotto/Canelo fails to meet the first criteria. Neither guy is a top 5 or maybe even top 10 pound for pound fighter right now. But it definitely meets the 2nd criteria which is why it is a big fight that everybody is looking forward to.
Dunno how you can say this. Cotto and Canelo are both easily top 20 in the world, and could be argued all kinds of ways into the top 10. We're not talking about two bums here. Both fighters may have lost to Mayweather but everybody has lost to Mayweather.

Cowboys and Steelers are top NFL teams with large fan bases but just because they play each other doesn't make it the Super Bowl. It's a big game that will get a lot of viewers and bring a lot of excitement though.

You know how tiring it gets explaining to people that as a PR we don't need a passport to travel to the US?

They don't know their own history, much less the relevance and accomplishments of other people.

And that fight lived up to everybodys expectations, right? C'mon now, people WANT and pay for FIGHTS! Not glorified sparring sessions where each man looks like nothing happened to them after the fight was over. They want ko's, or at least the fighters' going for KO's. They want action. They want a FIGHT!

Cotto and Canelo are 2 Big names in the sport, regardless of your opinion. They bring in fans and thats what it really comes down to. So is this a super fight of Pac/May levels, probably not and i doubt any other fight in our lifetime will ever be. But this IS a super fight. A popular mexican vs a very popular borikua for thee MW title of the world.

The argument as to whether or not this is a "super" fight is nothing but semantics, and its silly.

If you did a poll of the top fights that people want to see right now, I'd bet dinner that Canelo-Cotto is the consensus #1 choice, and top 3 at the absolute worst.

nobody wants to see Floyd-Pac 2, or Floyd-Khan. And Klitschko-Wilder would have mild interest, but 95% of the casuals have never heard of Wilder. Die-hards want Cotto-GGG, but thats not happening at the moment, if ever.
