Comments Thread For: Geale: Cotto's Year-Long Layoff Not An Advantage

Much has been made about the number 157, the catch weight Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale cannot exceed when they step on the scale Friday afternoon.

The number 12, the amount of months Cotto has gone without competing in a boxing match, hasn’t received nearly as much attention during the buildup to their WBC middleweight title fight Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Cotto hasn’t fought since he annihilated Argentina’s Sergio Martinez to win the WBC 160-pound championship last June 7 at Madison Square Garden.

Used to be a big cotto fan, now I'm hoping geale wins. Cotto needs to quit ducking canelo and ggg and the other top guys. He thinks just because he has good wins on his resume that he should be able to choose soft opponents as he pleases. It doesn't work like that, not if you want to keep fans

soft opponents lol geale is not a soft opponent and cotto is not ducking canelo or ggg learn the business of boxing canelo backed out the fight because he didn't want to wait and thought the Floyd pac fight wasn't going to happen it did and got bumped so if canelo would have waited a few more days the fight would have happen instead of canelo taking on soft ass touches and don't even mention soft touches because that's all ggg fights and cotto is fighting canelo next so what are you talking about unless canelo backs out again thinking hes the A side

As a fighter, Cotto is still my favorite of his generation. It is unfortunate that he mismanaged his success against Martinez. As a result, he found himself out of the ring too long to step back in against elite opposition. Because he has earned so much reputational capital throughout the course of his career, I'm fine with him taking on Geale as a good challenge after a year out of the ring. However, if he beats Geale and does not face elite competition in his next fight...he might begin to alienate even people like me.

So for cotto geale isnt a soft opponent but for GGG he is.

Oh how I love the hypocrisy of some cotto fans.

Did they say he was a soft opponent? No way they did...especially since he's fighting Cotto at a 157 Cw after getting stomped

The WBC are at fault here, they are the sanctioning body & should call the shots! So why are they not abiding by there own rules? Catchweight is a cop out & something that should stay with wrestling & a playground bundle. If the winner of Cotto/Geale doesn't fight Triple G next @ 160Lb then World boxing has a massive problem. The World needs a 100% champion in every weight division & that's what these so called genuine, non-corrupt outfits are there for. "Not scanky, corrupt gangsters unit's"!!!.............

I was going to say the exact same thing. Geale was an empty can and a bum when he fought Golovkin and now he's a tough, top quality challenger for Cotto. That would make Monroe an absolute killer for Cotto because he lasted twice as long against GGG and Murray would just be way too much for him to even consider.

Amazing how that works, isn't it?

After Geale is done with BLOTTO, it's time for GGG to give the rematch that Geale deserves, and finally we can see the titles unified!
