Comments Thread For: Jhonny Gonzalez Targets World Title at Super Feather

Two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-9, 48KOs) is looking to return to the ring on a date in the month of August or September in Mexico City or Los Angeles, in the super featherweight division. He wants to get a world title shot as soon as possible and plans to sit down with his promoter, Promociones del Pueblo, to go over the details.

Gonzalez was last in the ring in March, losing his WBC featherweight title, when he was easily knocked out in four rounds by the quick handed Gary Russell Jr.

He could get the shot. He's a marketable name with a shady chin.

Yeah, no doubt he will get a shot.. 130 is pretty devoid of names at the moment..

Wouldn't mind seeing jhonny at 139 vs mikey, salido, roman

Takashi Uchiyama and Francisco Vargas would crack Jhonny's china, . Takashi Miura has power too, but I think a Gonzalez vs. Miura is a 50-50 fight due to Gonzalez's far superior technical abilities. Gonzalez's best shot at a 130 pound title is against the Jose Pedraza vs. Andrey Klimov winner since neither of them hit very hard.

If Pedraza beats Klimov on June 13th I wouldn't be surprised to see Pedraza vs. Gonzalez in September or early 2016 if Pedraza takes an easy title defense first.

Martinez/Salido fight in Sept. so after that the winner would be most marketable fight.

Uchiyama, Vargas and even Fortuna would crack that glass chin. I think Pedraza will beat Klimov and win the vacant Ibf title. There is going to be a rematch between Martinez and Salido with the Wbo title at stake. I just hope Gonzalez earns his title shot by beating an actual contender before fighting a titleholder.

After that terrible/dreadful outing against Russell jr. Gonzalez should retire. He made Mexicans look bad & should be ashamed. He looked scared & 1demonsional not being able to adjust to speed. I never want to see home in the ring again unless it's a rematch with Mares. Even then that shouldn't be more than a late night telemundo fight...

I don't think Gonzalez can beat Fortuna. Fortuna rehydrates 10+ pounds on fight night, he will be a bigger guy than Gonzalez. I slightly favored Bryan Vasquez in their fight but we all saw how that turned out. Fortuna looks faster, has decent pop in his punches and I never seen him hurt in a fight. Gonzalez looked horrible and slow as f**k in his fight against Russell Jr. He doesn't seem to be able to take a punch and Russell Jr. is not the biggest puncher.
