You just have to look at Alvarez's options to figure out what he's doing. There's no one left for him to fight at 154 outside of Demtrius Andrade (and that won't happen).

GB is suing Haymon, which means Canelo won't be fighting the Charlo's, J-Rock, Harrison, Gausha, Golub, or Dolton. HBO won't pay him $3mill to fight Andrade, Baysangurov, or Rabchenko. Kirkland was his last option. Only option after Cotto is to fight MW's. He'll be laughed at if he tries to fight Bradley.

If I was Oscar, I would drop the lawsuits against Haymon, in exchange for Mayweather vs. Canelo 2 on September 12th! Canelo can get his rematch @ 154, and if he wins, he becomes the PPV King once Floyd retires!
he's not good nor smart enough to beat mayweather. No,if,and,or but. Plain and simple. ( TMT )

Some journalist was there listening to the manager come out with this crap - the obvious question to put to him was "if he can make 155 so easily what is the problem with fighting at 154? If he can come in at 154.5 is it such a big problem to make 154?" - but nah, too much to ask journalists to ask a spiky question.
At this point then it looks as if Canelo has created a 155 division just to attract attention and criticism. Imagine if GGG started fighting at 161 - oh my!! The hate would pour down on him.

That might be true, but which fight sells more, Mayweather vs. Alvarez II, or Cotto vs. Alvarez?

So he's not moving to MW any time soon, BUT he will still get to fight for the lineal MIDDLEWEIGHT championship against Cotto?

Am I the only one who sees something all ****ed up with this?

Cotto weighed 155lbs when he fought Martinez for the title.

Good analysis right here. But Canelo is 24 yet they are wrapping him up in cotton to protect him as if he would be 34 yrs old and clearly beyond his best - like a certain other PPV fighter? That's just it -- at the upper echelons boxing has become less sport and more business. Canelo is holding out for Cotto and Mayweather and nothing else.

He'll likely follow in the footsteps of Cotto and weight-drain some MW's until he's willing to weigh-in the full 160 and declare himself GGG-ready.

Canelo has fought his last three bouts at 155-pounds, one pound above the junior middleweight limit. His manager denies that his fighter is requesting a weight limit of 155 because there are issues with getting down to junior middleweight. Canelo faced Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland at 155.
