  • Comments Thread For: Williams on Trout, Ishe: How Many F***ing Tuneups?

Undefeated super welterweight Julian Williams returns to the ring on June 13 against an opponent to be determined in Alabama. WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder defends his title against Eric Molina in the Showtime televised main event.

Over the past 12 months or so Williams has grown frustrated with his ability to land a big fight. He is advised by boxing power broker Al Haymon along with several other highly regarded 154 pound fighters including Tony Harrison, Jermall and Jermell Charlo, and Chris Pearson.

The Haymon plan is to have as many winners as possible, so what we get are safe mismatches where the guy higher on the Haymon pecking order wins 75% of the time. He and his team apparently think that this is how you build stars, just by exposing them and padding their records. It's moronic. Stars are made when the stakes are high, when a man counters the odds. Julian Williams will be taken care of by his team, but it'll be hard to get those bigger fights under the Haymon model.

I'm a fan of Smith and Trout but Williams knows what he is talking about and has a good head on his shoulders. Everything he says is right on. In the ring, he is crafty like a veteran of 35 fights which to me is extremely impressive. Ironically, he reminds me a little of Hopkins not just because he crosses his arms. Be nice to see him against the best or near best soon. I heard him in an interview and he is really good guy.

Williams cruises through Trout and Smith. That's why they still tuning up, they know and understand that. It's not rocket science. Williams, you may never get a chance to fight either of these two.

Williams real beef should be with Haymon. Haymon has too many fighters but is rarely putting them in tough fights. So you are left with many of his guys on the outside looking in. Williams is in a holding pattern because of Haymon. Haymon is trying to protect his assets so don't expect to see Williams in those fights anytime soon despite how bad his fighters or the fans want it.

                  Stop hating on Al.

K2 isn't taking any chances with GGG.

I don't see you bi.tching about all their mismatches.

lamont and danny only happened because fans were grilling danny over the salka debacle. plus it was at a terrible catchweight so the stakes were almost nothing. ghost vs thurman was a decent match-up. broner vs porter is good tv, but one that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. also, porter is getting royally screwed with the weight stipulations, but that's to be expected since he isn't as high up on the Haymon pecking order.

still, you're picking out the aberrations. those are 3 fights in the span of about 16 months. the only time we get fair, meaningful matchups in Haymon boxing is when its a mandatory fight.
