That's a pretty lame reason. Did DeGale say that after beating Dirrell? Or did he say that a while ago?
It should be the goal of any top fighter and title holder to want or at least try to be the man in their own division. I don't think DeGale saying he's not on Ward's level is an acceptable reason, nor is it the kind of mentally I would ever want to see in a fighter. If he doesn't believe he's capable of being the best he's in the wrong sport. But I have a strong su****ion that he likely made those comments a while ago, before testing himself and defeating Dirrell and being a world champion. Perhaps Im wrong but that just isn't the type of mentality you see in fighters.
Its a quote taken out of context. He was just saying that Ward was the legit no.1 because he had proved it in the ring and that he was a step below that (in terms of what he had done in the ring).
