The difference is that cotto is a draw and the middleweight champion. He could have fought Canelo or GGG but he chose Geale.

Correction Canelo choose Kirkland and cotto choose geale. Obviously cottos choice is a feeler to see if he should challenge ggg. If Canelo woujd have waited a bit more they woukd be fighting each other. Choose words a little more carefully.
