Hopkins unified ALL of the belts for the first time since Hagler. When he lost to Taylor all the belts got scattered around and have been since. And now with Cotto as lineal champ it's all messed up (not Cotto's fault for beating Sergio).
Middleweight has always been my favorite division. It's the perfect blend of size, power, speed. So much history. I want to see Golovkin unify the belts and be part of that history. Just "knowing he's the best" doesn't cut it until he actually proves it. You don't go down in the record books by just having people think you can beat guys, you actually have to beat them. Cotto, Andy Lee, Lemieux/N'dam are the targets and Canelo after he most likely beats Cotto.
Imagine if Hopkins moved up in weight half way through his historic middleweight run because he couldn't get any big names or unification bouts? That's what some people were saying he should do back then. Don King had two title holders, and then three, and wouldn't let them near B-hop. But he stayed patient, beating all the top ten guys for YEARS and eventually at the age of 36 got his shot against Trinidad. Ended up with 20 title defenses. Well, Golovkin is at 14 title defenses (we can argue the legitimacy of that if course but title defenses are title defenses), he's cleaning out the division consistently knocking out top ten guys while waiting for the big names and other title holders, just like Hopkins. I'm sure Canelo will be his Trinidad. And then like Hopkins I'm sure he'll move up (just not at age 41!!).
