Boxing is on a roll building new stars

GGG vs Monroe has hit 50k searches on google trends. Now it's not as high as Canelo or Wlad's last fights did but that usually points to TV ratings of around 1.5 million.

This is pretty cool as in recent years the only boxers you'd see pop up on google trends were May, Pac, Cotto and occasionally Hopkins.

Now boxers are showing up fairly reguarly: Canelo, Wilder, Kov, Broner, Garcia, Thurman, May, Pac, B-Hop, Wlad, Cotto, GGG ... sure even Chavez. Boxing seems to be legitimately creating new stars. Big props to GGG though, the dude is getting legit ratings for fighting unknowns. By comparison biggish fights like Rigo VS Donaire weren't even getting attention a few years back. Boxing seems to be creating new stars with half the effort, as if the very fact May and Pac are retiring soon is causing boxing's centre of gravity to shift onto new names.

Rather sad IMO considering Roman Gonzalez put in a much better performance against a much better opponent on the same bill.

Where is the love for this kid? He is quite clearly p4p #2 even if his resume doesn't yet show it.

Sad that he wasn't searched? Love's been flowing in for him after the fact at least

I'll be honest, I consider myself a fairly dedicated boxing fan but I'd only heard of Gonzalez before he appeared on HBO, I hadn't gone out of my way to watch him fight.

I can guarantee you that I and a lot of other people will be waiting for him to show up on TV again, though. He really impressed on HBO.

By the way this is a great time to start inviting people back to watch boxing with us! I've made a lot of new boxing fans just inviting people to watch PBC cards and the recent HBO cards.

I had friends texting me last night and this morning raving about Gonzalez. These guys watch all the fights on US tv but have never seen him fight. I'm so glad he was able to get a shot on the biggest boxing network. He deserves to be seen.

It was his first time on HBO, give it time.

GGG is also a bigger fighter, which may account for why his fights are bigger draws.
