Lol, couldn't help thinking of Sharmba Mitchell in the context of the title.

That's said, Finito Lopez is a bit overrated by those who have heard of him (and not many do) based on the feeling that, yeah, he is underrated. It looks like a pendulum - pure psychology though.

But, yeah, such fighters as Morgan Ndumo or Keetichai Preecha or Toto Pongsawang or Surachai LetMePronounceItTwice and so on, weren't quite competitive (talk about Bum of the quarter). To say the least. He fought some good names and won against them but his record was padded in title fights - that's the fact. IMO, Gonzalez's level of opposition is comparable though more scattered.

In short, Lopez was a great fighter with one of the worst prolonged title reigns in history.

Is he overrated though? Where do people place him? No doubt a HOF'er and an excellent fighter in his time. And really beautiful to watch. I don't think I see people calling him an ATG or anything but I guess over time he's assumed mythical heights.

        I think he's very overrated.

Many do consider him an ATG and I don't see how.

I think people over rate his skills aswell.

Yeah I don't know about all that ATG talk. But I loved watching him. And he's deservedly a HOF'er IMO. But he would've really benefited from a move up to fight some of the guys at 108 earlier.

Lopez was an ATG, just in a different sense than someone like a Duran or even an Arguello. He will be in the debate for best ever at 105 for perpetuity. Can't discuss that corner of boxing history without him.

And I disagree with Dan that his skills were overrated. They weren't always fully tested, but he's basically Juan Manuel Marquez shrunk down. He's the sort of model fighter you can show a young guy.

Finito is one of the most technically perfect and fluid fighters I've ever seen. I can watch him box for hours. I think he's become so criticized that he's actually now more underrated than overrated. Nobody really has him ranked highly in terns of resume and accomplishments but rather appreciate his skill and technique.

I just don't see how he can be overrated.

Donaire and Vic were better at Flyweight to me. Tapia would have kept up with Roman just fine. He is good but more so because he has already dominated 2 other divisions.

Sosa and Viloria put him well ahead in terms of titlist types defeated through now 44 wins. Lopez still with more defenses and title fights, and that gap won't narrow unless Gonzalez is still winning title fights past 51 wins. The scale jumping for Roman will make it sort of moot past 112 but it's an interesting comparison in the lowest classes.
