Comments Thread For: Alvarez-Kirkland Most Viewed Cable Bout Since 2006

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez enjoyed a triumphant return to HBO in every conceivable way. The 24-year old former 154 lb. titlist registered what presently serves as the leading contender for Knockout of the Year after flattening James Kirkland in the third round of their May 9 meet at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

The bout was Alvarez' first fight back on HBO following a nearly three-year hiatus. Absence truly made the heart grow fonder among HBO subscribers, as the live main event drew a staggering 2.146 million viewers, peaking at just under 2.3 million viewers.

It not only becomes the most-watched fight of 2015 - surpassing HBO's April 25 event topped by Wladimir Klitschko's 12-round win over Bryant Jennings - but goes down as the most watched cable fight since 2006. [Click Here To Read More]

That's a lot considering how numbers have been looking lately.

Great news. A very good advert for future Canelo fights vs Cotto and Golovkin too.

Good. This is what boxing needs - entertaining fights getting high ratings.

Something good came from that travesty.

I agree. They can dog the MayPac fight if they want, but without that lead-in I doubt Canelo-Kirkland does those numbers. So Alvarez and GB should be happy that Mayweather chased them off of the May 2nd date that Canelo originally wanted.

Canelo beating a non competitive name guy who hadn't fought in 17 months. Guess easy KO's is what boxing fans want.
