Comments Thread For: Canelo Feels Better Prepared For Mayweather Shot

LONDON - Mexican ace Canelo Alvarez says he is ready to claim the mantle of boxing’s pay-per-view star after Floyd Mayweather hangs up his gloves.

The 24-year-old light-middleweight takes on big-hitting James Kirkland this weekend, live and exclusive on BoxNation, in an edge-of-the-seat thriller in front of 35,000 at the Minute Maid Park in Texas.

Despite refusing to overlook the dangerous Kirkland, the flame-haired superstar is prepared to fill the gap once Mayweather calls it a day following his last fight in September and has even opened the door to a rematch with the money man after his 2013 points loss.

“I'm ready. I'm ready for whatever comes to my career. I work hard, I train hard, I fight the best, and if that's the role [next PPV star] that I have to take once they're [Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao] gone, then yes, I'm ready for it,” said Canelo.

I wish Canelo were a better fighter. I mean Mayweather smoked him easy. Canelo didn't even attempt to be active enough to make something happen in that fight.

Just wish there wouldn't be such a huge drop in quality after Mayweather retires. But there it is.

Canelo fought with less courage than Manny and didn't win a round. He doesn't deserve a rematch.

Kirkland is coming off a long layoff, but i think he can get it done. Definitely don't let it go to the judges. Leave the Mayweather fight alone, theres Cotto and GGG..

Oh shut the **** up, you did worse than Manny which is just astonishing. I cannot think of one clean punch Canelo landed in that fight, at least to the head.

Canelo needs Anne Wolfe in his corner that way he could become a beast! He needs to stop fighting in spurts and go all round every second.

Floyd already said he is fighting a solid opponent, one to his liking not the public's.

It's stylistically a nightmare for him. He performs well against guys who come forward because despite what some people thought, he's a smart counter puncher who prefers to be stationary/back foot rather than a slugger who comes forward.
