Comments Thread For: Wilder To Return 6/13 in Alabama, Eyes Active 2015

Deontay Wilder’s first defense of his heavyweight belt is all but guaranteed to take place June 13 in Birmingham, Alabama. An opponent has yet to be named for his homecoming appearance, with the fight taking place barely an hour from his Tuscaloosa hometown.

The most oft-mentioned name to land the assignment – which will air on Showtime, live from the 8,500-seat Bartow Arena on the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) - has been Eric Molina, though Wilder’s team insist a decision hasn’t yet been made.

Wilder said on June 13 he will fight Tony Thompson! That's great! I have new respect for him. Better than another KO1 against a bum.

Please do not fight Molina. No dissing Molina but come on. That doesn't even make any sense.

I mean, of course his team is going to say that. And in a culture of belts for everyone...

Anyway, I think it's a positive for the sport if notable names and big attractions (and Wilder is well on his way, as evidenced by his big ratings pull for Showtime earlier this year) are willing/able to fight four times in a calendar year. I'll take a perceived soft first defense if he comes right back three months later.

I see your point, but "soft first defense" and a total joke of a fight are two different things. Luckily Povetkin will not accept a step aside pay day.. - If Wilder doesn´t want a tough fight in June at least he could fight Briggs to make it a big show for casual fans. Could be a funny event!
