when you win, you are presumed to be the better fighter. As such, you don't have to make an excuse for being better. When you lose, you are proven to be the lesser fighter and therefore need to explain to those who thought you were the better fighter.

Manny's gameplan wasn't the problem nor was his shoulder-Floyd is just better than him and always has been. Instead of saying this, he mentioned the shoulder-that is why it is an excuse.

Worse, it's a lie because when Manny was acting like the winner, he never mentioned the shoulder. He didn't because at that point he was trying to project victory. When Max said "you wer down on my cards", Manny couldn't find a reasonable response.

Had Manny's shoulder been really an issue, he would have said it right there. Floyd pointed out his shoulder hurt, yet he fought through it. No one questioned after the Castillo fight if Floyd had fought to win.

Manny was killed for not fighting to win and for a lackluster performance. He needed to explain this because he failed to when Max questioned him. so they needed an excuse for why he didn't try to win.
