I've finally come to the realization of Mayweather's style. He keeps the fight from ever starting into anything by feverishly controlling distance with just enough to keep them away. It's almost as if your watching 12 rounds of round 1 or 2. I mean it's one thing to see what your opponent can do in the first round or so, but to play the entire fight in survival mode or with the safety on is unsportsmanlike in the loosest definition. Yesss we all know this is how Floyd fights, and obviously he can do what ever he wants especially when people pay this much to see him. But where do you draw the line. I foolishly expected Floyd and Manny to leave a part of themselves in the ring last night. Manny started slow and had his moments but in best case scenario, all you can say is he was hampered by the rotator injury, disarmed by Mayweather, or simply didn't want it bad enough producing a performance with very little urgency or intensity. Floyd on the other hand was going for points..just enough to win the round while at the same time getting paid about 138k a second to avoid any instance of exchanges. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately Floyd will influence this next generation of boxers heavily because of his undefeated streak and not beating Oscar or Pacquiao but winning against them. How will the next generation take Mayweathers style into account? Surely centering your style completely on defense by doing anything necessary to avoid a punch like flinging yourself 6 feet backwards from one punch and running backwards in motion to get away from fighting is the absolute easiest way for a boxer to ensure very little substance wins but a win at the very less. For you Mayweather fans out there, and I really don't know but do you want boxing to transition through the ages into a more sprinting match with whoever can do the most to avoid exchanges in the ring and landing there gloves just enough on the opponents head to steal the round? I feel like the world is blind to what Mayweather has done. He has taken advantage of the rules of boxing and in a way presents a style that lawyers its way to victory leaving the fans and boxing experts with the gut feeling that this is not what boxing is about. Maybe it's just the way things change and that the sports elite superstars will just become more conservative knowing that hey I can "win" against the other best by just avoiding everything he does and doing just enough punching to win each round. It's like counting cards, yes you can do it but it's just not the way the game is played.
Floyd is influencing heavily how the game of boxing is played. In every facet and detail his influence is defined by doing the very minimal to win the fight and stay undefeated. I don't see that Mayweather has set the bar to high at all with his record and style. What I see is the future of alter ego's centered on undefeated streaks of wins that ultimately will have little substance. More and excess is not always more appreciation and wins representing true spirit of the human condition. Sometimes less is indeed more. Is Floyd just that one in a million athlete that takes this perspective or could this be the future?
