Another big difference. Ali started clinching more when he was visibly on the decline against great fighters. WK has done it throughout his prime years against fighters such as Lepaei and Jean Marc Mormec, who stood literally no chance of winning even without the clinching.

Ali clinched, WK has taken this to a whole new level, against opponents who he didnt need to clinch against.
Dude he clinched against Joe Frazier for Christ sake!

Wlad would never be allowed to fight opponent as weak as that!

And visibly declined? Ali's best opponents and best fights were in the 70's when he clinched. Just as Wlad was better later too, cause experience and strength ***** youth.

The main difference was that Ali's career was shortened and Wlad's hasn't been because he was smart enough not to use hid face for a catchers mitt.

We arent comparing across eras though are we Elroy. Frazier was one of the dominant fighters in his era. Ali was past prime, anyone who watches boxing knows this. Some of his best wins came later because that just happens to be when he fought a lot of his best opponents.

Klitschko clinched in the middle of his prime fighting Alex Lepai

      ****ing tragic.

How much holding did Ali do, he held so much, blah blah blah
Cos Jennings is just as world class and has a devastating left hook.

Alex Leapai is 240lbs, massive chin, massive power and strength and crude or not, bum rushed Wlad trying to take his head off cause it was his only real shot.

Of course Wlad is gonna have to clinch him!

Enter Thomson, Wach, Pulev or another tall fighter.. Funny enough, not a lot of clinching really.

If you want to deduce anything, he clinches the shorter opponents because they are the ones that try to get in close the only place they CAN work!

Obviously Wlad wants to keep them on the outside and if he can spoil instead of risky infighting behaviour, well it is what it is.

You might not like it, but it's pretty bloody smart and key to success.

I disagree entirely with Ali being better at all in the 60's. No boxer is better in his 20s than his 30's, even in those days!

He was much stronger and had a far higher boxing IQ and generalship in the 70's imo.

If you wanna see Ali today, look to Tyson Fury, he's just a really big white version complete with an even bigger mouth. LOL

                Stay out of it Jas!

It's true if he were a yank you'd be eating him up and excusing the clinching for sure!

Plenty of fighters are better when they are younger, especially ones like Ali who base their style on athleticism.

Lepai does not have monster power. He is not a good fighter in this era. No matter how you try to spin it, he was no threat to WK. Neither was Jean Marc Mormeck. Yet Wlad still clinched against them both in his prime.

This is not the same as Ali clinching against some of the best fighters of his era (Frazier, Foreman) when he was clearly past his prime (coming off an enforced layoff to boot in Frazier 1).

Actually i would say early 70's was Alis best years he set down on his punches more and was a bit stronger ,Ali himself right after the Quarry fight in 71 states he felt smarter and stronger .
