In a pound for pound skills sense I'd pick Mayweather and Roy Jones Jr over Ali
they were more skilled IMO
Ali is my all time favorite fighter, was a great ambassador for the sport, but he was human and had flaws like every other fighter
both had the natural talent, reflexes, and speed of Ali but added better technique and defense.
Ali didn't throw body shots, couldn't evade an elite left hook and didn't have to deal with Many fighters on his talent level, with his size and fluidity and coordination....smaller fighters deal with that all the time.
Smaller fighters in every combat sport, whether boxing, MMA, wrestling, Muay Thai you name it had to develop better skills. Smaller fighters are faster, throw more punches and have better stamina. Also smaller fighters depend more on skills than one attribute like power. That's why the smaller guys are damaged goods a lot younger. They get hit more and throw more punches.

Hopkins resume sh-ts on both Floyd and Manny. Hes probably the only boxer today I think would've shined in the 15 round era. He wiped out a whole division and fought power punchers in their prime (Echols, Tito, Pavlik, Kovalev).
Elite/Prime Hopkins opponents: Roy, Oscar, Tito, Winky, Kovalev, Pavlik, Taylor, Pascal, Echols, Tarver.
Elite/ Prime Floyd opponents: Corrales, Hatton, Canelo, Castillo.
The only boxer of this modern era comparable to Ali is B hop.
Floyd only clings to his undefeated record as proof for being TBE. so if he picks up one loss, his whole world comes crashing down, what else is he gonna hang onto for comfort.
Calzaghe is also undefeated so is he also better than Ali?
Hell, Oscar has better resume than Floyd does. (Quartey, prime Tito, prime Shane, prime Vargas, prime Hopkins, prime Pacquiao).
Greatness to me is based on your level of opponents and what stage in their careers did you fight them.
Calzaghe beat Roy Jones, but we all know that Roy was done, so historically Roy is still ranked higher than Joe.
Please tell me what fights on Floyds resume are comparable to Ali vs Frazier, Foreman, Norton. Which ones?
He had a chance to fight fearsome punchers like Pwill and Margarito but opted for Baldomir and Judah.
He had a chance to fight what woulda been a nightmare in terms of styles in Winky Wright. But it didn't happen.
He coulda fought Pacquiao in 09/10 when Pac was a straight killer. It didn't happen.
He goes to hell and back vs a bum like Maidana, claims Amir Khan is a nobody but fights Guerrero.
Come on man, Floyd historically is not better than Hopkins, let alone Ali.Last edited by elishua F; 04-24-2015, 08:13 PM.

all the romantizing about resumes doesn't change that these guys were above their peers in their prime as much as Sugar Ray Robinson was
Matter fact I couldn't name 5 fighters I'd favor and pick to beat SRR, FM, PW, or RJ at the best weight and prime
talent-wise they are the crème de la crème
the closest thing ive seen to Mayweathers style was Charley Burley...their is a video of him on youtube....dude never won a world championship but from 135-154 id only favor a handful over him....its not always about championships and resume....talent matters as well

there are several fighters that were better than ali
He was the most talented heavyweight but their are several guys that were ahead of him in terms of skills and technique with athleticism close to his.
Ray Robinson, Eder Jofre, Mayweather, Jones, Whitaker, Charley Burley, Tony Canzoneri, Willie Pep, Benny Leonard, the list goes on
its no disrespect to him but he was never the most skilled fighter....probably one of the smartest and will to win was through the roof

I respect Foreman for saying that each generation has improved and that the standard of boxing is better nowadays compared to then, basically admitting the sport has progressed, rather than other people who seem to indicate the opposite.
I think there's a mentality where people believe that the fighters of today just can't be greater than the ones of yesterday no matter what, and I think that mentality drives people away from the sport - why would you dedicate your life to something when no matter what you can't be recognised as the greatest?

Lets be real....do you see Roy Jones losing to Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, **** Tiger or any middleweight champion from the past?
Roy Jones was the Ray Robinson of his time athletically....ahead of his time
fighters of the last 40 years have the skills of the past but are better athletes, better nutrition, etc.

Foreman: Floyd Mayweather Better Than Muhammad Ali
At first Mayweather fans were like:

As for the fight, Foreman says he's rooting for Mayweather -- and believes he's the better fighter -- but says he thinks Manny will ultimately win the fight.
