Ali in fact called SRR the greatest and also respected the previous generations, and said that he didn't know who would win between himself and Marciano.

Plus Ali had a lot more to boast about by the quality of opposition he had beat.

There are many tapes of Ali with other great fighters. There is a particularly good one with Joe Louis and Ali, this tape can be found on Utube. First off, one can see how Ali acts in the presence of boxing royalty....heres a hint: Ali is humerous, warm and not ill at ease. Joe teases Ali and Ali's reaction is priceless. One can see the respect and affection both men have for each other.

Ali said a lot of things, many were tongue in cheek. When pressed Ali would often also say things like "Marciano would have really been tough, I don't know if i could have beat him." So comparing Mayweather to Ali does not work.
Mayweather by comparison is not comfortable around other great fighters. He pissed off Hopkins, says things about his ability with no sense of irony, and is clueless about how good guys like Leonard were...much less guys like Robinson.

There is a story about Ali that says it all about his behavoir versus Mayweather. A well known Karate fighter was set to spar Ali....So Ali sets the stage by humerously genuflecting to this guy..." This karate master will teach me a lesson" (Ali makes his eyes real big in an expression of feigned fear). The martial artist tells the story of what happens next: "Ali starts clowning and I go for him...can't catch him but I am going full tilt...Well...Ali flicks a jab and bam....my legs are weak, can't remember seeing the punch...Ali sees this and comes in support me, makes sure that I get on proper footing again and starts acting like I am tagging him, the exhibition ends and Ali is complementary and kind while being funny."

The karate fighter goes on to say how much he respected the fact that Ali could have killed him at any time, and how he will never forget the lesson Ali taught him."

I tend to think this story sums up Ali and his bragging ways. Mayweather was not raised, nor did he ever on his own, develop the character that Ali did. Ali bragged but was often being facitious while Mayweather takes himself so seriously that he allegedly went up to Hopkins and asked him if he wanted to hang out at his mansion. BIG DIFFERENCE!!

        I don't think so.

And people didn't call Ali the greatest before it actually became true.

I have to disagree with some of the posts here not only did Ali call himself the greatest he did it practically everyday ,so much now if anyone else does it they are ridiculed .Tyson even did it at on point for awhile and even a quote from Klitchko years back ....."When im at my absolute best theres no one in present or past that would beat me"....lets be real Floyd mentioned Ali so instantly he is now the bad guy ....well blame the fanbase of yester year for making Ali untouchable ,arraganance or confidence on Floyds part ? Probably both ,but hes the one undefeatted no poster can change that he earned the right to say that ,if Pacman can beat him it becomes real interesting then.

              This^^

              Others define greatness not oneself.

Good point - look how often he insinuated that Pac was a PED cheat. It soon caught on.

Great story. Bruce Lee once said that Muhammad Ali could beat him in a fight if they ever fought. Did Mayweather really ask Hopkins this?

Seriously though I am a Mayweather fan but no way is he greater than Muhammad Ali.

Nothing wrong with what Mayweather said. A fighter is suppose to believe he is the best.

With that said.....Mayweather is clearly a better fighter than Ali. People don't want to believe it because they have so much hate for Floyd.
