Comments Thread For: Andre Ward-Paul Smith Looms For June 20th Clash

According to Daily Mail, a deal is nearly complete for WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) to defend his title against Paul Smith (35-5, 20 KOs) on June 20th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The paper states that an official announcement is coming very soon.

Smith is coming off two hard-fought decision losses to WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham.

Two week ago, the paper spoke to Ward's trainer, Virgil Hunter, who told them the fight was close to a done deal. Previously, Marco Antonio Rubio was mentioned as the comeback opponent for Ward, who has been inactive since a 2013 twelve round decision win over Edwin Rodriguez.

But not to defend his crown. For some reason. How has he not been stripped?

His crown is the lineal one, which he defends every fight. Not some WBA super duper belt.

I agree with you. But all of that is behind us now and it's once again time to witness greatness.

#1 SMW in the world against the #2 SMW in his family.
That's cool though, this is on BET, so no problem with me

The no.2 p4p against an unranked opponent coming off two straight losses.
Ward should blow him away in less than 5 rounds.

What happened to the Froch mando BTW?

He could not defend his title due to legal issues, not because he did not want to. The WBA did the right thing in my opinion.
