  • Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Pacquiao: Mares Ready To Face Santa Cruz

A few days ago, it was announced that WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (29-0, 17KOs) would defend his title on the biggest pay-per-view undercard of the year. Santa Cruz will open things up on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao collide in the most lucrative fight in boxing history.

With only a few weeks to go, former three division champion Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15KOs) is ready to step in to face Santa Cruz on the card.

The two fighters were pretty close to fighting each other in 2012, but then Mares was upset by Jhonny Gonzalez.

At this moment the match is easier to make, because both fighters are now managed by Al Haymon.

It would be funny if this fight is on the undercard. After Arum huffing and puffing about it being disrespectful to put this card on May 2nd, even going so far as suggesting a later date, and then the only Mexican fighters on the card are from Al Haymon.

Yeah seems to good to be true, but damn it would be nice to have an actual meaningful fight on the undercard.

With the undercard looking like trash so far, this would be a hell of a co-feature bout! I'm all for it!
