A few days ago, it was announced that WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (29-0, 17KOs) would defend his title on the biggest pay-per-view undercard of the year. Santa Cruz will open things up on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao collide in the most lucrative fight in boxing history.
With only a few weeks to go, former three division champion Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15KOs) is ready to step in to face Santa Cruz on the card.
The two fighters were pretty close to fighting each other in 2012, but then Mares was upset by Jhonny Gonzalez.
At this moment the match is easier to make, because both fighters are now managed by Al Haymon.
