When they have more losses than wins? When the lose x number of fights? When they lose x in a row. When do you class a fighter as a bum or gatekeeper?
At what stage does someone become a bum or gatekeeper?

A true bum to me is a dude with a below .500 record.
Obviously a 2-3 record doesn't really apply because the guy is just starting out, but if you're like 13-18 or some ****, you're obviously just a body out there for other fighters (particularly young and upcoming fighters) to get work in with live bullets. Even in that case the term "bum" is harsh as f**k and pretty disrespectful for a guy willing to get in the ring, but whatever.
People around here are f**king ******ed. Like dumb ass mother**kers talking about how Brandon Rios is a bum (he seems to get the bum tag more than most) when dude has a 33-2 record with 23 KOs and has headlined a handful of HBO cards.Comment

A bum is a term used in a relative sense
When Gavin fights brook, Gavin is a bum
When Gavin fights skeete, he's not because they are on a similar level
Gatekeeper rarely wins but is on a high enough level to last rounds against top guys or against top prospects who wNt to face top guysLast edited by jas; 04-10-2015, 07:28 PM.Comment

These guys always come to mind for me when I see these threads
Reggie Strickland: Lost a career 276 fights (not a typo) and finished his career by winning just 1 fight in his last 18.
Robin Deakin: Won his first career fight and then has lost every one since. His career record stands at 1-51. Yeah dude is riding a 51 fight losing streak.
Johnny Greaves: Career record of 4-96.
Kristian Laight: Career record of 9-197. Currently riding a 27 fight losing streak.
Daniel Thorpe: Career record of 23-113.
Obviously these are really extreme examples. But yeah. I think it's safe to say these guys meet the criteria needed to attain true boxing bum status. By the way here's a fun fact...Daniel Thorpe actually knocked down Ricky Burns in a fight

Holy ****! Those guys are top 5 ATG bums. It's a shame Brian Sutherland lost the hunger for boxing. He could have broken Deakins Record. These guys always come to mind for me when I see these threads

I think the definition of a bum should be a fighter who has lost more than a quarter of their fights.
IF you set the bar much more stringently than that, then you have good boxers who are bums very often and exclude too many boxers who have fought strong competition.
If you set the bar much less stringent than that, then you end up with hundreds of quality boxers which makes analysis difficult in terms of opposition worthiness.
It should also be mentioned it's important to define the term "bum-beater".
Ken Norton, LaMar Clarke, Sonny Liston, Butterbean and Deontay Wilder are a famous few.
Although these boxers themselves are record wise anything but bums.. The opponents they achieved their records against certainly were.Comment
