  • Pacquiao-Marquez I. Did Marquez quit? Should Pac have been DQ'd?

NOT a troll/bait thread just a retrospective on JMM-Pacquiao 1 (a fight which I believe Pacquiao won CLEARLY with the massive 10-6 first round).

Everyone mentions how explosive the 1st round was but the 3rd and final knockdown has two different dynamics to it that I've never heard mentioned.

First, Pacquiao clearly and deliberately hit Marquez AFTER he was down. Marquez left hand was on the canvas his right had clinging to the rope; Pacquiao stopped for a moment and decided to still smash him with an illegal straight left hand. Joe Cortez (confused as usual) said and did absolutely nothing, and Jim Lampley and the HBO crew didn't make a peep about it. This was at least as bad as what got RJJ DQ'd against Griffin if not worse

On the flipside after Marquez got hit with the illegal blow he fell back on the canvas and laid himself flat as if the fight was over. He had both gloves covering his face like he was done and by the way he sprung back to his feet I think he was surprised that Joe Cortez was even giving a count. I strongly believe that either Marquez thought Cortez was going to call the fight off at the moment because of the all the knockdowns, or that for a quick second he was trying to look more hurt than he actually was in order to get a point deduction or possibly a DQ victory after the illegal punch by Pacquiao.

In my opinion Pacquiao deserved a 1 point deduction for that. If everything else remained the same on the judge's scorecard JMM would have won by a split decision.

    Thoughts?

Blow was illegal but not worthy of a DQ. I still believe RJ shouldn't have been DQ'd as well but it happened. As far as Marquez goes, I think once he felt that punch, he started to milk it til he realized nothing was bound to happen. Not a DQ, point being taken or extra time to recover. Take it as you may but, just like the rj-mg fight, it would've been an ugly way to end a fight. Especially after the dominance of Manny in that first round

Could have easily been a DQ. It wasn't like he was in the act of throwing when JMM was down. He threw the punch knowing he was.

The roy incident was worse because montel clearly took a knee and roy hit him twice well after. I dont think it deserved a dq but it was worse than what PAC did. What ac did happens often in fights when a guy isnt all the way down.

At least troll with some sort of wit and intelligence. Kat knocked him down, then proceeded to get stopped in the ninth

That was actually a great punch by Pacquiao when Marquez was falling. He should have landed one more in sequence to seal the deal and first round KO.arquez should have been KOd and Pac did not do anything illegal.

It was clearly an illegal punch. If Marquez decided to stay down it should have been a DQ, he decided to get back up so it should have been a deduction

I always thought that punch was funny, it was like Pacquaio was a lil irritated that Marquez didnt go all the way down so he just threw another kinda like saying go down bitch. lmfao.

That could have changed his entire career. If he finished him, there would have never been a rematch. Crazy how life works.
