Comments Thread For: Team Stevenson: Countdown To Kovalev Fight Begins

MONTREAL - The concretization of the The Ring, WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight unification fight between Adonis "Superman" Stevenson and Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev has taken another important step. The World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered a purse bid to take place April 17 in order to determine the promoter of this major event.

Initially requested by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) to insure the required time to prepare for a major event like this super fight, the WBC agreed to host the purse bid on Apr. 17 in Mexico.

The winner of this purse bid will have an advantage over the other promoter in terms of determining the date, place and television network for the light heavyweight showdown. Each group will split the bid equally on a 50-50 basis.

Hard to see HBO letting Kovalev go across to fight on PBC but who knows.

Right, so if they choose PBC or Showtime there's a good chance HBO will refuse.

If that happens, I hope WBC will make Stevenson fight the next guy in line, Eleider Alvarez.

if thats the case. HBO does'nt have a choice. they would'nt want to be the culprit for this fight not happening. nobody wants to,because this is one of those fights that absolutely must happen.

Much much bigger fight now. Adonis 37, this is his legacy fight, if you think he has one. He wants it and big fight financially so Al wants it.

                More from Fat Dan, fwiw:

If the Stevenson side wins I could see it on either platform -- Showtime or a PBC card on NBC in prime time. As far as Kovalev goes, if he is under contract to HBO (and I understand they are negotiating an extension) I would imagine his side would insist on his being allowed to fight on another network in the event their side lost a purse bid. It is not always like that. I remember one case specifically where didn't happen. When Lennox Lewis was heavyweight champ he had an exclusive contract with HBO. David Tua was his mandatory challenger and had a Showtime contract. The negotiations were brutal and Dan Goossen, who promoted Tua at the time, continually threatened that they would go to a purse bid. Had it gone to a bid and the Showtime-backed Goossen won the bid, Lennox would have had to vacate the titles because he literally was not allowed to fight on another network even in a purse bid situation. In the end, they made a deal, the fight happened on HBO PPV and Tua and Goossen got a huge number for the fight (more than $4 million if memory serves). In Kovalev's case I doubt his team would allow that to happen if they sign the extension.

Stevenson's ducking is proof that not much weight should be given to the "lineal" champ. Add Miguel Cotto to the equation, and at that point there is no longer any reason at all to care about the "lineal" champion.
