You realize he did beat Peterson while Peterson had the belt, right? It just so happened that they ****ed him over by making it a catchweight of 141, so Matthysse didn't get the belt for his win.

I do realize that I also realize he would've immediately lost it ...I also realize that if winning the title was so important he wouldn't have taken the pete fight under those terms.

No one ****ed Matthysse over, from what I recall he didn't want to lose his WBC interim belt since it made him mandatory to Garcia, so they made the PEDerson fight 141 so neither guy would lose their belts.
