Are you sure that in case Cotto vacates the WBC belt (or Wbc strips him), Cotto will not retain the Ring "lineal" belt?... And then fight Floyd, in September, with that "lineal" belt on the table?

That is possible, unfortunately. But will RocNation and Haymon make a deal together? Big money so they probably would.Comment

I wasn't 100% sure of this until recently when I read the rules (I'll try and find them and post here). Basically the lineal champ can only lose his lineal champ status if he loses a fight, retires/inactive for 2 (i think), or is convicted (or something of the sort). In short, he can't be stripped of the lineal championship.Comment

I guess that's why he dropped his title at 154 because he didn't feel like making weight? Or not drop it, but didn't choose to fight for a vacant title I should say and all because he didn't want to lose an extra pound.Comment

This is the same scenario that happened when WBC stripped Martinez and handed the belt to JCC jr; Martinez remained ring/lineal champ.

Cotto will wait for the May 2nd outcome -- in case Floyd wins, Cotto might skip even his June fight and go for Floyd in September, (possibly) with both belts on the table...Comment

You're saying Canelo would rather fight Cotto for a title. I'm saying Canelo doesn't care because he did the exact situation I'm describing when he fought Lara. Instead of making 154 for a vacant alphabet title and paying a sanctioning fee, he said we'll do the fight at 155 for no title. My point was he obviously doesn't give a **** about titles and just about money.Comment

1.The Champion loses a fight in the weight class in which he is champion.
2.The Champion moves to another weight class.
3.The Champion does not schedule a fight in any weight class for 18 months.
4.The Champion does not schedule a fight at his championship weight for 18 months (even if he fights at another weight).
5.The Champion does not schedule a fight with a Top-5 contender from any weight class for two years.
6.The Champion retires.
7.The Champion tests positive for a banned substance.
I wonder if number 4 considers catch weights to be at the championship weight. I certainly do not. So if Cotto does not defend his belt against a middleweight at MW weight limits for 18 months, he can be stripped.
If he drops to 154 to fight for a title, he can be stripped at 160 as that could be considered moving to another weight class.Comment

No doubt money is more important than titles to Canelo and everyone else but remember Lara had the WBA world/regular and Mayweather had the WBA Super so Canelo didn't value it very highly, probably correctly. Cotto has the WBC and Ring 160 titles, those have value. I'm sure he'd rather fight Cotto with them than without.Comment
