Comments Thread For: Nacho Focused: We Must Eliminate Gary Russell's Speed

Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio 'Nacho' Beristain, trainer of WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez, views the factor of speed as the biggest obstacle to overcome when they face Gary Russell Jr. on Saturday night at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. Russell came up short in his previous title opportunity, when he lost a twelve round decision to master boxer Vasyl Lomachenko last year.

“Gary Russell’s speed and quickness could be a factor for us in this fight. We must find a way to eliminate it. We need to find a solution to his quickness and do everything we can to win. We feel like we’ve prepared enough and are in a great position to come out on top," Nacho said.

That speed hasn't looked very effective to this point. A vet should be able to time it.

What boxing ability is everyone speaking about in regards to Rex? You mean the amazing technique he displayed against the 20 plus no hopers? Or the "boxing ability" that was on full display against Lomachenko, where he had an atrociously low connection percentage? I don't see it.

The guy only has one side to his game, speed. Remove that and he has nothing else. How exactly would he outbox a more lengthy, more technical and much more powerful boxer in Jhonny? I hope Rex's jaw holds up, his only hope is to cut the distance and unload then pivot out, but I can't see him doing that without eating a few bombs here and there.

If Russel Jr wins I'll eat my crow with pride, but I'm confident in Jhonny's abilities and experience.

I just saw part of GRJ's last fight. My goodness that was pitiful to watch. I couldn't get past three rounds. He cherry picked a light punching no-hoper who moved up a weight class. You have to see for yourself how bad his opponent looked.

The icing on the cake was when the commentators said that GRJ indicated he was weight drained against Loma. Yea, sure you were Gary.
