New Gary Hyde Interview - Update on Rigo's Status (Not Looking Good)

Q: Has there been any reply to your letter to the WBA in regards to forcing Quigg to fight Rigondeaux or vacate? Do you think they are likely to force him?

GH: I am confident the WBA will order the Rigondeaux-Quigg fight very soon. I have not heard back yet but I have been told the IBF will not recognize the regular champion in a unification fight

    --

Q: Should Quigg vacate and go ahead with the Frampton showdown, what opponents would you be looking at for Rigo to fight in the mean time? I saw Shingo Wake's name floating about.

GH: There aren't many fighters out there. If we go back to fight in Japan it would be a shame, especially while the top 5 fighters are running scared.

    --

Q: Did you had any solid dialogue with McGuigan about the potential Frampton fight after Frampton - Avalos? He's been talking a big game, do you think he'll put his man up to the test?

GH: I had no dialogue with McGuigan before or after the Avalos fight. He's shown absolutely no interest in making a Rigo - Frampton fight.

    --

Q: You mentioned that it'd be a shame if Rigo had to go back to Japan, but I saw you had mentioned in an interview recently that there have been talks about a Rigondeaux – Yamanaka fight. Personally this interests me way more than a Frampton, Quigg or Santa Cruz fight. Do you see this as something that could happen in the near future?

GH: They have no shown any interest in this fight so I don't see any possibility of this fight any time soon.

    --

Q: You mentioned that you don't want Rigondeaux to fight at 126, but there has been talk that he'd be willing to do it with a 10lb rehydration limit. Is this something you would be on board with should the rest of 122 continue to avoid him?

GH: No, I don't want Rigo to fight 126 and it doesn't matter what money is to be made. He's a small guy who has fought under 122 his whole life amateur and pro.

    --

Q: So there's no chance of that happening? I know myself and many others would love a fight with Lomachenko, would you be open to that at a catchweight perhaps?

GH: We would fight Lomanchenko at 124 with the stipulation that he must not go over 134 on fight night.

    --

Q: Has his team shown any interest? Lomachenko has mentioned before that he isn't averse to it.

    GH: We never discussed this.

    --

Q: What is the news on Rigondeaux's promotional situation? I heard there were offers from Warren and Rocnation, are they still on the table or are things staying as they are?

GH: Both promoters withdrew their offers. Caribe are his sole promoters right now.

    --

Q: Do you know why did Rigondeaux chose to stop working with Diaz? It seemed like they had a real connection.

GH: No idea. Pedro is an amazing coach but so too is Jorge Rubio.

    --

Q: At 34 Rigondeaux isn't a young boxer. Do you worry his prime may be slipping away for him? Do you feel a sense of urgency to get him the big fights before it's too late or do you think his style allows for longevity?

GH: I don't see Rigo in a bigger fight than the Doniare fight. Who is out there bigger than Donaire? Frampton and Quigg are not on Donaires level and Lomachenko is not in the mix. No way will Top Rank risk losing another star to Rigo. It’s just not happening.

Q: How difficult is it working alongside Caribe? From what we hear in the media you appear to have a lot of differences in opinions.

GH: I don't have much to do with Caribe. They are Rigo's promoters, Rigo respects them so I also have to respect them.

    --

Q: A while back Boris Arencibia mentioned that he was looking at having Rigondeaux fight in Miami. Do you think there is a market to promote Cuban fighters in Miami? And if so, why has no one really tapped into it?

GH: I don't think this will ever happen.

If Rigo could have signed with Roc Nation, Haymon or Warren his life would be so much easier right now.

Hyde seems fed up with them as well. If they aren't interested in going back to Japan their options are limited.

They can try to get the WBA to enforce Quigg but I think he would vacate and fight for Frampton's title rather than take the Rigondeaux fight. Quigg isn't very good and needs to cash out while he's undefeated.

Rigondeaux should just retire and go down as the greatest fighter ever for beating Donaire and only being dropped 10 times in 13 fights or whatever it is.

              What a waste.

Things like this is why I hope this PBC thing can become a UFC of boxing. Getting to see Rigo fighting the best fight after fight would have been great. Rigo is insanely talented, but his daylight hours are shrinking fast.

It doesnt seem like WBA are in any hurry to make Quigg fight for his 'World Title'. As an organisation they have no credibility left to lose so i suppose it doesnt really matter to them lol.

I think he is still better off waiting at 122 and getting the best fights he can for now. Frampton, if he beats Quigg, is getting to the stage now where his marketability wont be hugely affected by a loss, and i do think his team would entertain a Rigo fight sometime later this year or early next.

I dont see the value that others see in going to 126. Uncle Bob has many of the top fighters in the division tied up, and Haymon has hardly been trying his best to get a LSC vs Rigo fight going.

IF Rigondeaux retires without getting another top fight, it would be a sad day for boxing. Have we really reached the stage where the consensus no.1 and lineal champ cant get fights with his challengers?
