Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Pacquiao: Sky Gains Edge For UK Rights

According to Jeff Powell of Daily Mail, Sky has been in fierce competition with Frank Warren’s BoxNation to secure the British broadcasting rights to Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, which takes place on May 2nd from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The paper notes that BoxNation offered the higher upfront fee of guaranteed payment, but Sky is believed to have gained the advantage by offering the promoters a share of their pay-per-view revenue in addition to a guaranteed fee. But, Sky picking up the show may come at a higher price to the consumer - with a potential pay-per-view markup of £20.

I'm actually surprised BoxNation put up a bigger up front fee, considering how much money Sky must have but yeah, Sky can do a PPV at £20 a go, where as BoxNation is a subscription based service at £10 a month, so they can't really put on a special PPV, their subscribers would be pretty annoyed if they did.

The upside for BoxNation would be they would get a whole load of new subscribers for that month, maybe a lot of casuals who might watch the fight then watch other fights and decide to keep the channel, paying £10 every month. So i understand BoxNation putting up a big offer. You have to speculate to accumulate yada yada yada...

Having to listen to Jim Watt's saying "puncheeese" for 12 rounds would drive me to insanity.

I think Sky now sell day passes for around £10 but it's very hard to see UK casuals shelling out a combined total of £30+ for the fight.
