  • The Gennady Golovkin Myth

    Thread Update ***

I made this thread back in March. Ever since then the Gennady Golovkin Myth has been well and truly busted in a very ugly public manner.

Team GGG have made excuses for why all the fights I brought up in this thread can't be made.

Ward - "Has to be at 164 doe"

Lara - "Doesn't deserve it. Is not as big a name as Willie Jr"

Hopkins - "We might fight a 50 year old man sometime in the future"

    DeGale - "Not PPV doe"

Everything I spotted about Team GGG's MO has come to fruition. This thread clearly deserves some kind of merit award for it's sheer genius :wank:

This fairytale that he's being ducked by everyone and their mother needs to come to an end especially with this laughable fight that has just been signed against Willie Munson Junior.

I was actually one of the people who defended Golovkin's next choice of opponent because I believed there was no one good really available at middleweight but I'm going to have to re-evaluate my position.

Why wasn't Erislandy Lara considered? Today at the press conference Golovkin's manager, Tom Loeffler, said that Gennady had requested a southpaw mover and who better than Lara? After the Murray fight, Loeffler quite clearly says there's no reason why Erislandy Lara couldn't be Golovkin's next opponent....

Having watched the video again now, I notice the little caveats he drops in about HBO and whether they want to put the fight on. Then I read this quote from him. I'm not sure when it was made but apparently, it's from his Twatter page.

“He [Lara] is not approved by HBO and never on our radar, he should be calling out Quillin, if he wins, he becomes interesting,” Loeffler said. “Lara fights on Showtime and had draws with Vanes and Molina, GGG vs Stevens=high ratings, who watches Lara? Lara fights on Showtime and is Jr Middle, why would he be on our radar? Lara should call out Floyd, same promoter same TV and he beats both Khan and Maidana, should be easy fight to make. Good fight between 2 solid guys. Yes, same promoter same TV and same weight, makes more sense for Lara to call out Floyd.”

That statement is absolutely pathetic. Lara was not approved by HBO but Willie Jr is? And then trying to pie Lara off onto other opponents - it's akin to something that the regular ******ed fanboy on NSB would do

I have given Golovkin something of a pass for not fighting Andre Ward. I understand he is waiting to see what happens with the Cotto situation. But why can't he be fighting someone like Lara now?

I even suggested Bernard Hopkins - why wasn't that fight pursued? He's an HBO fighter, isn't he? The speed at which this Willie Jr fight was made suggests that they had this **** already in the can....against a can....and never had any intentions of securing an opponent that would pose GGG real problems.

Can anyone confirm or shed some light onto why Golovkin-Lara wasn't pursued? Same for Golovkin-Hopkins. The fans deserve answers.

Haven't watched the video yet but you are raising some serious questions. It seems like they rushed to secure the Willie fight and bypassed Lara's barking by claiming HBO didn't approve, amongst other "reasons".

It doesn't seem to be GGG's fault though but more or less his team. Perhaps they don't want to run the risk of GGG looking badly against a mover and thus his stock possibly dropping, but they should remember that GGG is already damn near in his mid 30's. People love to anoint fighters as the next big things but at this stage in his career, GGG and his team should really be attempting to get any name that is atleast considered a challenge.

A fighter being considered to be the future of the sport and the successor to Pacquiao and Mayweather with only a 3 to 4 age gap between them is quite alarming. Especially since GGG has no real signature win on his resume yet.

Look, I'm a GGG fan and all but the Lara fight would have been more significant than taking on a novice, especially at a stage in GGG's career where he should be atleast attempting to secure big fights by either moving up or down, hell even meeting half way against solid names.

Oh well, another highlight reel KO incoming in May

Isn't Lara an al haymon fighter? Don't haymon fighters fight exclusively on showtime and pbc? I'm pretty sure that if the fight were to happen,it would have needed to happen on HBO,since that's where ggg, has his contract. As for the fight,Lara gets killed in 4 rounds,so its pretty pointless either way.

I agree. I'm a huge Golovkin fan. He is a FANTASTIC fighter.... but I made a similar thread a couple of weeks ago:

        http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=669490

Basically, I think his managing team has reached their ceiling. Sure, he's become somewhat of a "star" on a small scale and Loeffler has done a great job with him as far as helping turn him from an unknown to a very popular fighter in America. BUT, ANYONE could of done that. He's ALWAYS had talent and it's his TALENT that has gotten him recognition. The reason he wasn't "known" before Loeffler is because he was fighting ice cream men in Germany and Kazakhstan...... He could of literally had any promoter in the world and all they had to do was set him up with that first HBO date and bring him to America like Loeffler did and his career would of taken off in America the same way. But it was his current team who brought him over and they deserve credit to a certain extent (at least up until this point)

But I think they've reached their peak, and it's very sad for me to see as a Golovkin fan. I made a couple of points throughout that thread that I'm not going to really go back into- but one of the big things is I feel like if he had ANY big American promoter right now (Top Rank, GBP) there would not be as much problems with people "ducking" him.

One of the reasons I say that and I say it in my thread is: I can't help but feel that Loeffler/HBO are "milking" Golovkin for as long as they can and if they were truly looking out for Gennady's best interest, they would NOT be taking no for an answer for the "legacy fights" out there... and not continue to keep settling for these "best available opponent-stay-busy fight," fights. (which is what they're doing.) The "Golovkin Model" has worked thus far but it's been almost 3 years..... Time to move. Make the big fights ASAP. The man is 32. Stop milking him, stop being greedy and stop the "stay-busy, best available opponent" fights..... Because it's simply been too long, and if they have to keep doing this because no one's accepting- then as I said: His current team has reached their peak and he should really look into signing with someone else. Can you imagine what type of fights Arum/DLH (hell even Haymon or Roc Nation) could and would make for GGG?

cliffs: Golovkin needs a new team. this is simply unacceptable, it's been almost 3 years. if they can't get the big fights for him- they've reached their peak as his managing/promotional team and he probably needs a new team.

Here's Tom Loeffler's interview from today's press conference...

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmTw_Mo0Q8w

          Can't embed for some reason.

Now the Andre Ward fight apparently has to be at a catchweight?

I thought that was just Golovkin's rabid and scared fanbase used to roll out that stipulation but there it is from the manager's mouth.

What kind of message does that send?

          - "Nobody will fight Gennady. He's the most feared man in boxing. We'll fight Chavez and Froch at 168lbs but they don't want the fight"

          - "What about Andre Ward?"

          - "Uhmmmm,....errrmmm....164?"

Pathetic . I'm done giving these jokers a pass.

why do you even entertain an andre ward fight when he's not active, the fight isn't happening until he returns to activity, regardless of what's being said now, when they are negotiating things will go differently, and golovkin will want the fight, from there they'll do what has to be done to make it happen

                GGG vs Hopkins?

I don't even think Bernard can even make 168 much less 160.

Plus Bernard is coming off a loss what interest would that make at this point?

I mean you make some valid points but seriously Hopkins?

Look at the interview I posted in the OP and in my last post. Loeffler says he has a great relationship with Haymon and there's no impediment to working with his fighters.

They didn't even consider the fight or try to pursue the possibility of making it happen, let's be real. This ******** of a fight was already in the can.
