Comments Thread For: Brayd Smith's Death Causes AMA To Call For Boxing Ban

The death of a young boxer in Queensland has sparked renewed calls for the sport to be banned in Australia.

Toowoomba boxer Braydon Smith died when his life support was turned off in a Brisbane hospital on Monday, less than two days after he lost a 10-round featherweight bout.

The 23-year-old collapsed 90 minutes after a WBC Asian Boxing Council continental title bout with Filipino John Moralde on Saturday night.

Don't ban boxing. Just teach better defense fundamentals in order to get rid of as much unforeseen damage. More work at the hips so that shots only graze you.

Na, let's have 15 rounds instead.

Honestly, if boxing gets universally threatened to get banned and more and more people start calling for it and it's not only one country wanting it; I know i'm gonna get **** for this by couch warriors, but make 10oz gloves for 147lbs and down, 12oz gloves for 154-175, 14oz for CW's and HW's. No need to ban it, just make it safer. There's nothing uncool about slightly bigger gloves. Who cares about what is tough or what is being "p*ssy" or whatever name calling these brute boxing fans want to say. I like boxing as a sport and if KO's decrease because of bigger gloves, but also brain injuries, slurred speech, and deaths decrease as well then let's do it.

First mistake is that you don't "play" boxing. Get that clear from the outset.

I wonder if these guys also called for a ban on Horse racing in Australia after there was over a half dozen high profile jockey deaths last year ?

          Somehow i doubt it.

There is a lot of disagreement over whether bigger gloves are safer or more dangerous in regards to causing brain damage (since gloves are designed to protect hands from breaking and enable accumulated power shots, not to protect the brain). A lot of guys get punchy sparring in 16+ ounces and are probably a tragedy waiting to happen. Single punches almost never kill, it's the accumulated pounding of an fortified fist on a "stock" brain.

I'm not sure which side I agree with but I doubt a few ounces up or down would have saved his life.

There are always going to be deaths in boxing, there are deaths even in non-combat sports, it's unavoidable. It's just more emotional in boxing because you look back and realize you watched someone get beaten to death.

It's a tragedy but this is boxing!

I didn't see Aussies calling for cricket to be banned after Hughes was killed by a bouncer.

Wouldn't you just allow boxers to get hit even more?Bigger gloves would allow boxers to take even more hits to the head instead of being knocked out.

lol I would think you will know better.

That has absolutely no significance on the outcome whats so ever, just boils down to the individual. RIP Brayd Smith but he would have died in a car crash where most would have survived.

If a sky diver, race car driver or foot ball player dies, does the AMA start whining about banning those sports? No because the AMA uses boxing for publicity. What about MMA? They are just being fools.
