Are world titles being devalued in boxing today?

What I mean by this is, are fighters more concerned about which bouts make them the most money rather than which fights will make them a world champion. For example, fighters these days are willing to vacate if their manager tells them to cough cough Peter Quillin whereas back in the day, that would be an outrageous thought. On the other hand, domestic level fighters still dream and would give anything for a title shot even if they aren't ood enough e.g Brian Rose and Lee Purdy. What do you guys think about the significance of belts in boxing today?

A world title belt these days means very little compared to a few decades ago. Way too many "belts" out there today.

Some fighters really care about a belt like your boy Mattysse for example he was(is) holding on to that mandatory shot for hella years. I remember he said it would be a dream and he wasn't gona cut his rat tail off till he won

        Is the sky blue.

They are certainly devalued but they are still really important and generally speaking guys usually have to be pretty good to pick them up and certainly to really hang onto one.

Still though if someone follows the sport relatively closely it is pretty easy to get who the top 5 are in the division and how the belts relate to that.

Yes they are. There are 4 different champions in each weight class. They don't even want fighters to unify belts. The WBC won't let you hold another belt if you are their champion. They have really ****** rules. The few good rules they have they don't enforce. For instance a big shot like Mayweather can be the 154 pound champion for years and never defend his title and they won't take his title away. Their rules say he should be stripped of the title. The 4 different alphabet title groups have almost completely different top 10 contenders from each other in any weight class. A fighter might be the number one contender for one organization and unranked by the other three. World titles are still important and fighters should still try to win them for prestige but they don't have the value they used to have.

next week we'll discuss how using gloves and ending unlimited rounds will affect boxing's future.

and negro boxers deserve to fight for title.

Of course they are. Half of Pacquiao's titles are paper titles.

The most devalued title is that 152 pound title Floyd won that made the 154 pound champ what a joke

There was way too many "world titles" out there There should be only ONE world champion per weight class. When I was a kid the Heavyweight Champion of the World was the supreme athlete admired & respected by all. Now no one outside of boxing knows who is champion. Try this Ask a few people on the street who the HW champ is I'll bet the majority will say Mike Tyson
