  • Kathy Duva questions the Haymon Boxing Model (good read)

I would copy and paste it but it's too long but for those interested here is the link:

To work the plan needs to attract sponsors, without sponsorship it's likely to fail and sponsors don't usually want to touch boxing.

Duva says boxing has an image problem with regard to sponsors which would explain why Haymon has cut the seedy entourages, questionable entrance music, got rid of the ring girls, no corner talk and cut short Broner's interviews.

Haymon seems intent on cleaning up the sport's image to sell it to the masses so that big sponsors will come in.

I still think they could have entrance songs, but just normal songs, doesn't have to be gangsta rap.

Had no idea that PBC was buying airtime from NBC - I assumed it was a partnership.
Duva is making very valid points - PBC needs to generate enough revenue to cover expenses such as buying airtime and running the event (including purse money). The two main streams of income are ticket sales and sponsors. And indirectly perhaps higher future PPV buys when one of his fighters are built up into a big star. But that is a lot of immediate expenses and I can't see the revenues being higher. Saturday had to be a net loss. The question is how deep are the pockets to take several losses before the revenues can exceed expenses?
As a fight fan I will just enjoy the fights while they last.

very intresting and I like what she said here

Duva also questions the high purse size of the first PBC card. All four fighters on Saturday’s show made more money by themselves than Duva’s total show purse sizes of $150,000. She said it distorts the market and cannot be sustained.

"What are you going to have to pay fighters to take on a real challenge? And how is that viable? How is it feasible? Now, you’ve distorted the market for the fighters, too. There’s going to be ramifications of this."

Duva says the PBC purses were not driven by market forces but the deep pockets of investors who essentially don’t know what they’re doing. She likened it to people who decide to open up a restaurant because they like to eat.

"I spent $150,000 on the purses for the shows I did and the high point was 3.2 million people. They spent 6 million on their purses and their high point was 4.2 million. Something is distorted there. It’s not sustainable."

I heard rumor,so don't quote me on this. The rumor was that haymon was giving mgm grand employees, discount s on tickets, and along with those discounts, came free tickets in order to make it appear as if they had a much larger audience. Do you know if this is true?

Great read. While Kathy still seems somewhat bitter she got moved out, she does make solid points.

The main difference between her and Haymon is he has associations with major sponsors from his days as a concert promoter which should make it easier for him to obtain sponsorship.

I'm sure this is true as it happens often in boxing that comps are given to fill in the audience.
