Comments Thread For: Schaefer: Mayweather-Pacquiao Bigger Than Ever Before

Former Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, is not in agreement that Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao would have been a bigger match six years ago.

Back in 2009/2010, Schaefer and Top Rank were negotiating the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown. Both sides were very close to a deal, but their negotiations fell apart after Pacquiao rejected Mayweather's demand for a random drug testing protocol.

Last month, a deal Mayweather-Pacquiao was finally reached and the entire sport was ecstatic.

There are some in the industry - promoters, managers, writers and fighters - who believe the fight would have been bigger if they would have staged it in 2009 or 2010.

After five years or so, the great Manny Pacquiao has proven to the boxing world that he is a true champion...a true warrior. After a loss, the Pacman did not make any excuses and he just admitted to the whole world that his opponent was a better man that night. In his lost he showed everybody how a fallen warrior should take it. He fought younger and better fighters after his lost and proved to his own camp and friends that he learned something from that loss.

Pac lost to Marquez not because JMM was a better boxer but because Heredia gave him the juice.

Damn straight, Marquez was on the juice in the third pacquiao fight too. Pacquiao hasn't legitimately lost to anyone since the first Morales fight, and even then Morales didn't let him wear his Reyes gloves. Floyd is about to find out may 2nd that he is fighting the best fighter in the world and probably the history of the sport. I cannot wait, I have my 100 dollars ready, this will be one of the best days of my life

Leftist/******* nonsense from Schaefer. He is probably buying the inflated unemployment numbers that the govt. released.

Yes...this fight may break records but adjusted for inflation? You wouldn't be charging so much for PPV's for the sole reason that "people can afford it". A 100 dollars per view is absurd. But the thing is...you have to because promoting it and buying air time in theaters, television etc,. costs so much more. All because of inflation caused by govt spending, borrowing and printing.

The Floyd/Haymon combination is a genius money making apparatus.
5 years of waiting added at least $100.000.000 to the negotiating table.
I think the fight ánd the prefight buildup is much more weighty now.
They both slipped a bit, which could lead to more landed blows.
But leaning heavily to a Mayweather decision, skills pay the bills.

These Pacquiao fanatics have not moved on yet from the KO from Marquez. They are still holding on to the dreamed up alibi of illegal drugs Marquez presumably took during the fight. Be good to yourselves and move on. Pacquiao has moved on, and he is not even making excuses for his loss to Marquez.

Floyd never wanted the fight then.. The drug test crap was smoke and mirrors to prevent the fight during Pacs peak.. Pac agreed to testing years ago and still tue fight wasnt made..

Floyd was now forced into signing.. Fans had enough, Pac finally called him out, and Moonves solved all the issues..

No one wanted Floyd to face any one other then Pac. Those handpicking B level fighters are over..
