If he hadn't been in with Lomachenko I reckon Russell would have come up short against Gonzalez because the step from fighting nobodies to title level is so huge. He got licked fair and square by Lomo but that experience will imo have his mindset spot on for this. Jhonny is a ****er but has nothing on Lomachenko's all round skills and, while there's always a chance he'll get nailed clean, Russell's speed and movement get my vote to win by decision.

I was thinking the same,,, saying hes a brawler, that is so wrong, his style is boxer/puncher i would say,,, the only bad thing is his chinComment

It's now or never for Gary Russell. I think this is a much better matchup for him stylistically than Lomachenko.
Never got the hate for the guy. He's quiet, doesn't talk trash and just shows up and fights. He came up slow but 2 of his last 3 fights will be against Lomachenko and Jhonny Gonzalez. Not a lot of other people in the sport can say they have fought 2, top 5 contenders in the span of 1-1.5 years. He's not the TBA killer anymore and its time for him to show and prove.
I'm looking forward to this.Comment

Jhonny Gonzalez should beat Russell. Russell has fast hands but I just think he is one of the more over rated boxers out there.least he is fighting a quality opponent. I didn't expect him to beat LOma and I don't expect him to win here.Comment

Skills pay the bills, not just speed.
Takes more than speed to win a fight, just ask Khan. Besides he said the same thing before he fought Lomachenko and it didn't work. The problem and its huge because he also has NO POWER,
The problem I see with super talented fast and speedy Gary Russell is that even though he has all those gifts he STILL basically has to have his feet "set" BEFORE he can let go of all those super speedy combos that he loves to throw and rely on so much.
That was all to evident in the Loma showdown as he danced a jig around Russell and beat him to the punch over and over until he broke him down, exposing his limitations. Its was a beautiful display of some REAL boxing skill by Loma.
Gary Russell needs to learn how to REALLY "Box", with his legs in conjunction with your upper body movement, like ...lol Loma, or Sugar Ray, Oscar etc u get my point, needs to learn how to flow with his legs like an elite boxer.
He's also a thin bodied fighter, not much to him, ability to move out of range with legs important, but yes he's abit muscular and cut, very athletic and quick, but with his legs in short quick darty like steps, likes to scramble with his feet to get into striking range mostly to unload his quick combos, and twist with his upper body to avoid an attack mostly instead of his legs, he doesn't really "flow" like an elite boxer, needs to be more flow like, and not just dynamic with his legs imo.
Probably never reach his full potential imo and probably wind up losing more fights that he may be expected to win. Yes I think Mr. Russell is abit over-rated at this moment, but I see what he could be, IF. :ANYWORD:Last edited by ManAnimalX; 03-09-2015, 04:36 PM.Comment
