  • Comments Thread For: Tarver: Pacquiao Fast Enough To Offset Mayweather

Former champion Antonio Tarver weighed in on the upcoming mega-fight between welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight takes place on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Tarver, currently a heavyweight contender and a commentator for Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV, sees Pacquiao as a very dangerous opponent for Mayweather. Despite Pacquiao's brutal 2012 knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez, Tarver sees his physical gifts and style of fighting as presenting some threatening problems for Mayweather.

Yet another "misleading" headline. Here's what Tarver said for those that WON'T read the article

"We’ve seen Pacquiao knocked out, but at the same time, he possesses the type of style and from a southpaw stance, we cannot lose sight of that. Pacquiao is a tremendous southpaw, something that Floyd Mayweather hasn’t seen a whole lot of, and Pacquiao is moving at light speed.

Tarver views Mayweather as the quicker man, but he still feels Pacquiao is quick enough to change the tide of the fight or land closing shot.

"I don’t think Pacquiao can match Floyd’s speed but I think he’s fast enough.

I couldn’t match Roy Jones’ speed but I was fast enough to offset his speed. That being said, I think Pacquiao is gonna have some moments and you know he has a very powerful punch.

I think Floyd wins a decision
but if this fight doesn’t go the distance, you have to lean toward Pacquiao landing that shot within the distance" Tarver said.

Oh come on, the pertinent thing was Pacquiao is fast enough to offset Floyd's speed. He made it in reference to his own fight with Jones; Jones had great speed but he was able to offset it.

Seems like all these articles are in favor of Pacquiao..with the misleading titles.

What I learn on these boxing sites are that society is easy blind fold. Pac is great a fighter, and he throws punches in bunches when he doesn't have to think in the ring; a good puncher, but a monster puncher at 147 he's not! Some of the monster punchers at 147 who come to mind were hearns, Julian Jackson, Tito Trinidad, Mosley, etc. Pacquaio chops you up with barrage of punches if he's able to land them. On Mayweather, few might land, and they might not even land properly. One thing I can say, is that whomever wins this fight will have to able to impose their style more than the other man.

And as Freddie already pointed out, there's no room for error. If you can't adjust to the other man's fight game call it a night.

It's funny because people keep forgetting how fast Mayweather is. Manny is going to get beat and then the excuses come rolling in.

I think it's going to take Mayweather 2-3 rounds to adapt to Pacquiao speed. Pacquiao will be dangerous early

Everyone talks either a Pac KO or a Floyd win by points, Pac has won a lot of rounds due to flash knockdowns of his opponents and that can change the tone of a fight fast. I don't think Pac knocks Floyd out, but he will land a lead left or right hook from an odd angle at some point that will test Floyd's balance when it happens and affect the score cards even if Floyd just buckles but stays on his feet.

                  Manny is twice....

....as fast as Floyd. Floyd is more accurate but conservative. Pac beats Floyd two out of three times.
