Why are boxing fans so obsessed with fighters from the past?

Most of the fighter from the 30's to the 70's are way overrated by boxing fans. I recently watched allot of footage of past fighters and those guys are mediocare at best compared to fighters of todays era.

Does every sport have so many grumpy old fans who cant appreciate the present?

It's true but 80s onwards were better or equal to today's fighters.

I agree the past is very much romanticized. A lot of snobs overrate past fighters who didn't look all that or who didn't even have any footage of their fights.

Way back when, these fighters fought every month and sometimes several times a month as opposed to now where if a fighter breaks a pinky nail during training the fight is canceled or postponed. Many fans respect the throwback style toughness of those fighters. They came to fight!

Legacy is the name of the game. Old fighters are all we have to compare present fighters with an gauge their greatness.

I agree with Jack Johnson as his style was revolutionary for his day but has evolved since... But Sonny Liston?? That's just ridiculous!
