Comments Thread For: Abner Mares on Al Haymon Jump: He is Boxing Now

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (28-1-1, 15KOs) spent his entire career with Golden Boy Promotions. Last year, when his promotional agreement with Golden Boy was running out, Mares made a decision not to extend it and instead signed a deal with manager/adviser Al Haymon. Mares also broke ties with longtime manager Frank Espinoza.

On March 7th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mares will faces Arturo Santos Reyes as part of the debut edition of the new Haymon boxing series, Premier Boxing Champions, which is going to be televised on NBC.

Abner Mares is absolutely right. Al Haymon will do great big things for boxing.

When I look at the future of boxing I can't help but smile .

We need to give it about a year or so to see the impact he has made on the sport. Right now its a 50/50 chance that he either takes it to new heights or fails miserably. As it stands the networks seem to have little faith in him as they are making him pay THEM to air his cards on their network. They see risk in investing in him as well.

I give Haymon credit, he's trying though. He's losing money, initially, on this business venture. NBC did not buy his time, he bought theirs. And I'm pretty sure same with Spike, etc.

LMAO!! Even if these dudes felt some kind of way about Haymon we saw in the standard publicized contract that they are not allowed to reflect Haymon in any negative way...so what's he supposed to say? They can't say anything beyond sing his praises even if they were unhappy. He's boxing, well 2013 and 2014 proved otherwise.

IF he is successful this year he will be have NBC, CBS, ESPN, Spike and Showtime paying to air his programming next year and have Floyd possibly poised to go 50-0. Not bad.

One question-if he fronts the money for the shows, how do the networks and he split the advertising money?
