Comments Thread For: Gennady Golovkin-Martin Murray: Post-Fight Report Card

On paper, Martin Murray looked like the toughest test to date for Gennady Golovkin. That played out in the ring with Murray lasting more rounds against Golovkin than anyone had before.

Murray made it to the eleventh.

    No further.

With the finish line, the ‘at least he didn’t get me out of there’ achievement within sight, Golovkin landed one wallop too many after dropping Murray twice in the fourth and once in round ten.

And when GGG eventually cleans house at 168 (and believe me, he will), just what are you going to have to say then? I'll bet it's, "GGG must move up to light heavyweight as super middleweight hasn't the talent which GGG will face at 175, so move up he must." Or something like that. And as for that rusty gate named Andre Ward, you may continue to give him the benefit of doubt until he gets into the ring with GGG at which point all will suddenly discover that GGG hits too hard and is too skillful and powerful for the "fight when he wants to (and that's not very often)" Andre Ward. This day is coming. Get ready.

That would depend on the ref. If Ward wasn't allowed to clinch and head butt, he would be in trouble against GGG, even with his size advantage.

If Ward is still the same fighter that he used to be, he'd school Golovkin.

Murray is same size with Ward. He tried to clinch, and Golovkin would land punches in clinches.

I used to think Ward would be a favorite if he fought Golovkin. After the Rubio fight I started doubting whether that would be the case. After the Murray fight, at least for me, Golovkin should be the favorite...

Lemieux is a more dangerous test than this version of Abraham

Froch is at the end of his road and looking for a relatively easy payday

Ward is the only real fight at SMW and Hunter said he wants two or three fights before facing Golovkin and with Ward's pace that could take 4 years. At least a year if we're being serious.

Moving up to SMW permanently would be foolish because he isn't a SMW and even if Cotto ducks him he's WBC interm champion and will get that belt. Alvarez will be at MW so that fight will have to happen and the upcoming talent at MW is better than SMW.

He just said he would like a couple of tune ups. He didn't say "before facing Golovkin."

Even something like Golovkin-Arthur Abraham would be more interesting than what Middleweight has to offer right now. Abraham is faded, and flawed, but he still has serious power and he’s been a cut above the Murray/Macklin/Geale level over the years..
I agree. Those were my same thoughts while watching the Abraham fight Saturday. And Golovkin got in the ring with Abraham after Sturms last fight. Hopefully there's something to do that. (Sturm-Abraham first would be nice though)

Looking at the TBRB rankings, the bottom of the top 168 list would make for more interesting fights than the the top of the top 160 list. Golovkin should think about positioning himself in the belt rankings at 168 by fighting fringe 168 pounders in order to get himself a mandatory sport at 168. Even fringe contenders at 168 are more interesting than the many fringe 160 contenders he'll likely face in the future.

Whats the point of this post? He said before facing top comp. Do you think that includes Ggg, or is he more tuneup quality?
