Most Recently? I would say Canelo and Lucian Bute!

Also Seth Mitchell was getting a lot of of HYPE, at one point he was getting more hype than Wilder

Also put DAVID PRICE in that mix as well!

It's always interesting seeing threads like this because the idea of hype job is quite subjective. And people often use their own personal motivations and likes/dislikes to point at guys who are/were hype jobs to discredit people they don't like.

Lacy was never a great fighter, anyone who had seen him previous to the Calzaghe fight would attest to that but HBO were trying to build new stars, they still are, so they needed a hook to get in the audience and both Lacy and Broner have been those hooks at various times. In terms of Lacy, some of you talk about as if he was a bum but remember, Lacy was a guy who had won 4 of his 5 previous fights via stoppage. He was strong and hit hard and he was fighting decent opposition, guys who were genuine contenders. It wasn't a group of tomato cans.

Some of the "hype" around him was justified so HBO and the American boxing media at large jumped on that, while serially underestimating Calzaghe, who has been a champion for almost a decade by this point and was on the verge of clearing out the division. Lacy wasn't great but there was not a single SMW at the time who could have done to Lacy what Calzaghe did that night. He humiliated a thoroughly good fighter with exceptional power and he did so on his terms. It was a flawless performance.

In terms of Broner, he is still young and still has a ways to go. HBO in the US and Sky here in the UK were billing him as the next Mayweather but he fell short of that by miles and will never reach those heights and in many ways, his shameless promoting (p4p ranking?????) was even worse than the PR machine behind Lacy. Broner didn't have the show stopping power of Lacy or any of the reflexes needed to pull off that shoulder roll reflex.

What's worse is that Broner didn't lose to a world beater like Calzaghe, he lost to a C/B level slugger who doesn't exactly have the best 147lb career around. But like I said, he has time to improve.

To answer the TS question Lacy if I had to pick one. Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy lost his left hook after surgery. He was schooled by Joe Calslappy and was injured after that. he was physically never the same. I am not making excuses for him as he lost and lost but losing his signature punch probably didn't help his career much.

Adrien "Brush My hair" Broner jumped up two weight classes from 135 to 147 and took on a tough Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi. He out boxed Paulie which is NOT so easy to do. He looked great and landed the harder cleaner shots. Paulie doesn't have much power only 7 KO's and is always ready to go the full distance. Marcos Maidana is not cream puff, the best comparison I can make is Margacheato or Tony bag of cement hands....He throws punches from all angles and he has power to hurt you. To that point Broner had not been hit by a welter weight and one with some pop, just ask the mighty Khan. I think Broner will stay at 140 for a while there are some good fights down there for him. I wouldn't call him a hype job he definitely has athletic talent and hand skills. If he played more defense he would be more like TBE but he throws punches and the fact he can be hurt makes me want to see him fight.

Lucas "Please Cut That Mullet" Matthysee - I wouldn't call him a hype job. he has three losses Judah by split decision I think that was questionable, the same with Devon Alexander split decision questionable. In the Garcia fight he had a badly damaged eye that definitely limited his sight. That fight was a close fight. I believe two of the judges had it 112-114 and the 3rd had it 111-115. He lost to a former Undisputed WW champion Judah, former junior welter weight title holder Alexander and the current Junior Welter Weight Champion Garcia. He has KO'd everyone else he faced with only one win by decision and one by DQ. I don't see him as a HYPE JOB AT ALL!!! He is a quality opponent for anyone at 140.

Not too many look good against Austin "No Doubt" Trout just ask Cotto. He is tough to out box with that awkward south paw style. His punches have the knack of busting you up but not knocking you out. Difficult opponent for anyone at 154, I don't see a win against him on your record as a BAD MARK. Canelo's approach against Floyd was to try to outbox him. He didn't want to throw wild punches and look awful until he got tired and was easily countered like all of Floyd previous opponents. He tried to use his jab like Cotto did and box letting Floyd lead. It didn't work but at a young age of 22 he had one judge see the fight at 114-114. I wouldn't hardly call this a schooling. Lara can be put in the same category as Trout awkward south paw that boxers are not lining up to fight. He won a SD against Lara, the fact he has a win against him when others are avoiding Lara says alot. I don't see this as bad marks against him.
