Leonard and Duran fought 15 rounds intensely.

Many fighters these days at the top level are huffing and puffing after 8.

Maybe it's more to do with the professionalism back then, or that PED use was more prevalent back then.

Exactly. They took all manner of shit back in the day to give themselves an edge. The difference was the stuff they took wasn't designed for performance enhancement, it was for curing horse worms and the like.

Yeah but Leonard and Duran are two of the greatest fighters ever.

It was designed to give extra muscle mass to livestock to produce more meat.

Or make the Horse win at the races.

Legal stuff like protein shakes, creatine pre work out drinks, natural test boosters and vitamins are all big advantages for today's current sportsman

You just have to look at the physique of today's top athletes compared to those of yesteryear.

I think the world is more anti drug/cheat today, in the past they might have just thought of it as a secret weapon.

But they have been so many more advancements in sport and a lot of boxers are using these methods now.

Plus more training less fights are better for a boxer's development.

A lot of boxers get some very good sparring these days.
Right on.. Tougher breed back then IMO in regards to that.

They just don't make em like this anymore:

                Sprinters are faster

                Footballers score more goals

Baseball players hit more home runs

Snooker players get more century breaks

Tennis is played at a higher level

With the advancement of sports science, sportsmen being more professional tactics and training methods have made huge gains in all other sports.

                All except one.

Well that is if you listen to your average boxing fan

Which sees boxing in a very nostalgic way. Where the boxers in the past were faster, hit harder, could take a better punch, were tougher and had more stamina, more skilful and had better tactical awarness.

Hard to believe yes. Despite all other sports improving boxing has gone backwards.

Are you one of those that believe this rubbish?

Luckily they time the 100m or some of you would be claiming Lewis was faster than bolt
Boxing is a three thousand year old sport, at the least. To try and argue that boxing hasn't changed over the years is silly. Looking at the progression of heavyweight boxing, from Joe Louis through Wladimir Klitschko, would show you that.

Training has changed, fitness has changed; heck, the way that fighters take care of themselves has changed.

The fact that rates of fighters dying in the sport have fallen to basically zero is a big thumbs up to progress imo.

                  No it isn't.

Boxing is about 150 years old.

And I agree there has been constant improvement. Some people seem to think though Boxing has stood still since the 1970s.

The fighters of the past were more skillful. A lot of guys today can't even cut off the ring properly which should be a basic skill.

Maybe other fighters are just better at not getting cut off.
