  • Comments Thread For: John Molina: Floyd Mayweather Would Beat Cotto Again

Junior welterweight contender John Molina, who returns on March 7th against Adrien Broner, would pick Floyd Mayweather Jr. to beat Miguel Cotto for a second time - if the two fighters come together for a rematch on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Cotto is rumored to be the backup opponent for Mayweather, if the pound-for-pound king is unable to reach a deal to face Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather (47-0, 26KOs) won a twelve round decision over Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) in May of 2012, but it wasn't easy. Following that fight, Cotto came back at the end of the year and lost a decision to Austin Trout. He reinvented himself in 2013, hiring Freddie Roach and then pounding Devlin Rodriguez for an easy KO win. And then moved up last June to the middleweight division to easily dominate Sergio Martinez for the WBC title.

I always like hearing John Molina's insight on things. He's a sharp dude and a great talker, I'd like to see him stick around in the sport after he's done fighting.

I would also agree with his statements. The only way Cotto could ever conceivably win is if Floyd finally got old in the ring. Although he didn't look the best in his 2 bouts with Maidana, I think he's still plenty good enough to beat Cotto.

        I don't.....

I disagree. Cotto is not the same fighter he was when he fought Floyd, the first time. Floyd isn't either. Floyd is aging and both Cotto and Manny, seem to be improving, while Floyd is declining. Cotto doesn't gas anymore and is punching like prime Cotto again. These would be huge factors in the fight. Cotto is going to KO Bradley, Rios, and would give Canelo and GGG all they can handle until their size takes over.

The problem is Floyd is the A side and he will demand that Cotto come down to the lowest catchweight, And Cotto will do it because a fight with Floyd is worth allot of money. Floyd would win.

But if the fight was at the official Middleweight limit of 160 then it's a different story. Cotto would have a much better chance

... and I suspect your judgement above is entirely based on Cotto's last fight -- against that crippled senior citizen...

              Nope.....

Not at all. A prime Sergio has problems with Cotto, because of Cotto's skill, but Sergio would win. Sometimes, it's about who is in your corner, who is training you, and the IQ of who's around you as well. Roach is a great fit for Cotto and made an immediate impact on him. The way he prepares for a fight, has changed. His conditioning has vastly improved as well. Floyd has aged and his reflexes has shown us this over the two fights with Maidana. Cotto's jab, footwork, timing, and power would make this a SUPER fight. I would favor Cotto and think he hurts Floyd this time out.

... I see: you are preaching the second coming of Cotto due to Roach -- who was in his corner for his last two fights only (both against corpses)...
