LONDON - Former world middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin believes old adversary Gennady Golovkin will successfully defend his WBA Super world middleweight title against Martin Murray on February 21, LIVE on Channel 5, but is hoping the British challenger can pull off an almighty upset against all odds.

Thirty-two-year-old Macklin challenged Golovkin in June 2013 and came up short, losing via stoppage in round three. Since then he has watched the man known as 'GGG' go from strength to strength, defending his belt a further four times, and now awaits the challenge of Murray in Monte Carlo.

Macklin is not one a hell of a fighter. He's euro level. Murray will provide a much better gauge of GGG's ability.

I'm pretty sure the result will be similar.

And nothing Murray has shown so far indicates he is a level above Macklin.

Murray's gloves up, march forward style is going to make for a serious test of his body against Golovkin.

Really all Murray is bringing to elevate above the likes of Macklin is physical strength. His defence is tight but he's not that evasive or slippery.

He's going to be relying on Golovkin not being able to push him back, and I don't know that he's going to be up to that challenge. If he is it might be interesting.

Don't know about that. Murray was facing a very different version of Sergio to what Macklin faced.

Macklin was level on two cards going into the 11th and up three points on the third. Sergio battered him in that round, but then that was still a Sergio in good condition.

Murray faced a crocked Martinez who had re-injured his knee four days before the fight.

But it was difficult, knowing that four days before the fight I had injured my knee, and one day before the fight my elbow almost came apart, and I couldn’t even lift my left arm, and then in the second round I fractured my hand. I had to struggle a lot, a long, uphill battle, but I thought, ‘I am leaving my heart here, I am leaving my life.’ And I did.”

And Murray still didn't get it done.

I think he looks a better fighter than Macklin in some respects, but there's nothing to separate them in their respective histories as fighters.
