Speculation on my part but Haymon is about power so it makes sense in the short term to take short money if in the long run you control all the players in the game there's probably a better return that way in the long run.
Thurman, on the other hand, has been a well-protected princess who is fighting his first quality opponent. If anybody is getting overpaid, it is Thurman -- regardless of how much they are paying him.
